Default help, diet for diabetic hamsters?

Does anyone have anything to say when it comes to the diet for diabetic hamsters? also what exactly is the cause of diabetes?

(other than sugar intake and genetics. Sugar intake is debunked as a cause and genetics are only making it easier to happen)

also, is it fine that my hamster's food mix has 1 percent mulberries? (5 grams in my case)

how high is the recommended fiber intake for diabetic hamsters?
do I need higher protein or slightly lower? (is 19.60 protein fine?)

and does anyone have any recommended dried veggies or unique ingredients that could significantly up the fiber?

Have a look on the Forum under Healthcare. There should be threads on diabetic hamsters.
I don't think sugar intake is the cause because hamsters can get diabetes when they are still babies. The causes are probably the same as in humans.

I fed my diabetic hybrid dwarf hamster a normal diet avoiding fruit or anything withsugar or honey. I fed him the hybrid mix from Rodipet and gave him mealworms and a bit of boiled egg for extra protein plus a small amount of fresh veg daily. He loved cucumber and always ate it.

I had to adjust his habitat and use washable items because the glucose in diabetic pee can quickly cause harmful mould and bacteria on bare wood. I didn't know about plastikoting then and i had to replace damp patches of substrate frequently.

I don’t know if it’s the same for hamsters as humans but I knew someone who was a severe diabetic and you have to watch out for carbs too as these can cause insulin spikes. They used to have to check their blood sugar level all the time though and eat sweets when it got too low or they’d pass out. I don’t know how this would work for hamsters?

That's probably the insulin controlled type 1 diabetes you are thinking of.

With hamsters its more like the type 2 diabetes i think. I've recently read that its treatable with metformin but needs an experienced exotics vet to work out the correct dosage. Some people supplement with fenugreek, apparently.
