Smile Different Hamster Food

Hello! I've been feeding my Russian dwarf hamster, Peanut, the Oxbow Essentials Healthy Handfuls Gerbil & Hamster Food for the 6 months I've had her as that is what was recommended to me. I wanted to transition her to a mixed food with seeds and whatnot. Does anyone have any specific recommendations? Thank you!

Higgins Vita Garden is the proper diet in the US - not Sunburst which is loaded with dried fruit which really isn't a good thing for hamsters to be eating every day as part of their main diet. Don't add Mazuri either though, it's fairly low quality and there are much healthier things to give for boosting protein(for example Pure Bites freeze dried shrimp, turkey, and chicken as well as plain boiled egg).

Perfect thank you, that’s actually what I was planning on getting! I just wanted to get some input on here as well before I made my decision

Just making sure: Is Hazel Hamster mix also okay? (For Syrians) My impression is that it's the U.S. version of Harry Hamster, and that that is also recommended. I just bought some for the new hamster I (hopefully) will be getting soon, but I can probably return it if need be.

It is fine, it's not the best but nor is it the worse. I think it is a good one considering I think you have limited choices in the USA. It's definitely one I would recommend in the UK for people on a budget but for syrians only.

Higgins Vita Garden has better quality ingredients - no artificial dyes etc, which unfortunately happen to be deeply hidden within the ingredients lists with the Hazel Hamster/Harry Hamster foods. I would stick to Higgins Vita Garden instead.

Thanks very much for your input, Luna and Amityville! I'm going to get the Higgins Vita Garden. Rather than trying to return the Hazel Hamster, I might mix the two of them together and then gradually transition over to just the Higgins.
