Whimzees and walnuts
I have just got in a supply of whimzees and walnuts. The whimzees seem to have gone down well; I will try the walnuts next. I'd really like some advice re how often I can feed them to my ham. She's a dwarf - so would one walnut and one whimzee per week be too much? She also has a seed log in her enclosure; I think I should take this out for now as it is perhaps overdoing the treats, and she started being very picky about her food yesterday.

Re: Whimzees and walnuts
That sounds liek a lot to me.
I’m not sure how long whimzees used to last mine now (haven’t had a Russian for a while) but I would wait a few days or more after they finished it before giving them another.
Some can go a bit mad with their first whimzee & eat it really quickly, so you might need to keep an eye out for over doing it to begin with!
Are you giving walnut in the shell? If you are then maybe one every couple of weeks for a dwarf ham, I give mine little pieces rather than a whole on in the shell, so probably less than a quarter of a walnut a week.
If she uses the treat roll & has always had it in the cage I wouldn’t take it out now.

Polo loves a walnut - she runs around with it, never gets to the nut just loves peeing on it - I swap it when it stinks for another. I would imagine a Russian would struggle to move it around but I'm ready to be proved wrong!

Maker they certainly can move them around, I don’t think I’ll ever forget the night one of mine carried a whole walnut in the shell into her wheel & took it for a run

Petite, I guess it depends on the size of a whimzee. Because you can get really tiny ones or really large ones.
I have a robo and I wasn't sure with him, I gave him a large hedgehog one and he has just been nibbling bits at a time for a month. If that had been all he ate I would have removed it. I have also given him 1 walnut.
I also keep an eye on my hamsters weights, which give me an indication of what is going on food wise and health wise.

Re: Whimzees and walnuts
We never really know how much they actually eat.
Hamsters often carry their treasures off to a safe place. Now and again i do a spot check/clean when they're not in their cage and come across the whimzee that i thought had been eaten and other treats, stashed away.
Same with nuts. Henry used to love cracking monkey nuts open then took the nut to his house and stripped the brown skin off but ate very little of the nut. He chucked the nut in his bin ( he was a very tidy hamster) probably because he wanted another one to crack open.
I crack a walnut open and leave about a quarter in one half of the shell and hide it in a homemade hanging toy made from cardboard and jute string because hamsters love to sniff out and find food.

I bought the "extra small" whimzees. The next day it had disappeared - I imagine she had carried it off to her nest as a Very Special Treasure. I haven't checked yet to see if any of it is still there - I try not to disturb her nest as if I do, she stops using her house, and I would rather she was tucked up snug and safe as the days get colder. Most of her other food still disappears apart from one type of biscuit that she always ignores. (She's always been quite happy with Harry Hamster, but I have a dwarf-specific mix on order from Rodipet for her to try.)
Our attempts at weighing her haven't been too successful - she is very resourceful! However, we will have to try it again. As far as walnuts are concerned, I will just give her a piece very occasionally.
Many thanks for all the replies - this feedback is really helpful.

Re: Whimzees and walnuts
Well, walnuts, chestnuts and whimzees all went down really well. But she's not so keen on the Rodipet mix, and neither am I. She loves me to hand-feed her pieces of Harry Hamster, and to find pieces I've hidden around her enclosure. With the Rodipet, that's not so easy (tinsy pieces) and although I'm trying to switch her over gradually, she's resisting. I would actually go so far as to say it looks as though she has lost weight since I introduced it.

Funny you should say that, me and a friend think our hamsters lost weight when we changed our hamsters onto Bunny dreams (sort of similar to Rodipet). I mix mine with Harry Hamster as I know Twinkle my syrian loves the big pieces in that, just not the pellets, but then I give him some science selective pellets too. That all seems to help him maintain his weight. It might not be 'scientifically' correct what I do, but I would rather Twinkle maintains his weight than lose it.

Re: Whimzees and walnuts
I do the same. My Syrians prefer the Harry Hamster but i have tried the Rodipet and Bunny Dreams mixes as well but will give them a miss in future.
My dwarfs prefer the Bunny Dreams over the Rodipet because they don't like the herbie/grassy bits and always leave that.
If your dwarf prefers the Harry Hamster, i'd give her that. It's a good, balanced and no added sugar allrounder, easily available as well.
I do want to try the ratrations Mixerama mixes once the current dwarf food supply runs low.
