Default Instant baby porridge

While at Aldi today i saw a tub of Heinz baby banana porridge powder to be made up with hot water.
Can hamsters have instant porridge like that?

Was it this one Ria?

I wouldn't as I didn't think hamsters need anything with milk in? It seems to hav a lot of vitamins added to it too. I would rather give them just plain oats and dehydrated banana (on the rare occasion i give them banana)

It’s true milk isn’t good for them but occasionally a tiny bit is probably ok. If it’s for a sick elderly hamster I wouldn’t worry about a little bit of milk powder too much though. I’ve just got this one and it doesn’t contain milk. Also Cow and gate baby rice - haven’t used either yet though. No milk listed in ingredients although it does say - May contain milk and soya but that’s just the usual warning I think like - May contain nuts etc (if produced in that environment). Interesting that baby porridge is more maize than oats which is maybe why it is instant to mix. It’s the smell of milk in standard porridge that makes me feel sick! The baby rice is just rice powder. It says add hot milk to make it but you can make it with water.

I wouldn’t worry about a little bit of milk, if I’m giving porridge to an elderly ham that’s lost weight I make it half water half milk & it’s fine.
The amount of vitamins in a ham sized portion would be minimal too so as long as it wasn’t given to frequently not to worry.
I did get some plain instant baby porridge for my porridge loving hams once & they wouldn’t touch it!

My elderly one liked a spoonful of oats microwaved just with water then mixed with a little pureed apple or banana.

Thank you all.

The milk didn't worry me but all the added vitamins etc did. All sounded very artificial to me so wasn't sure if a hamster could have it.
I'll try it tonight, give Henry a bit and try some myself.

I bought banana flavoured Weetabix once (for me) and chucked them straight in the bin because they tasted awful and artificial.

Got a feeling this lot is heading the same way. Henry and i are equally fussy when it comes to food.

Used the Ella's kitchen one last night Very easy to make - just added a bit of kettle water to it and stirred. Both hamsters ate it all up. The bag should last me a very long time! I put a teaspoonsful in a mug and added the boiled water till it was the right thickness - it doesn't take much water. I had it too runny at first so had to add another teaspoonful to get it the right consistency which was then way too much for two hamsters.

Smell still made me feel sick! So it must be just the hot oats smell. Very weird. Anyway I find it much more convenient than trying to do a small amount in the microwave.

That will go on my shopping list if Heinz tonight turns out a flop.

Serendipity, have you tried wearing a face mask while making porridge?

Lol. Good idea. Usually I just leave the room when OH has it. It's a horrible wave of nausea and a lot of belching. But yes I might do that for when I make it for the hamsters. Seems a lot of palaver though. I'm assuming the baby rice won't affect me. It has only been the last few years my bizarre porridge smell thing.

It really is bizarre. Would be quite a laugh to go to a hypnotist to find out the underlying cause of a physical aversion to porridge deep down in your psyche.
Maybe somebody made you eat porridge in your early childhood.
