Re: Mazuri Rat & Mouse Diet vs Rodent diet
The proper diet would be Higgins Vita Garden(at least in the US and Canada), not any kind of lab block. Lab blocks aren't suitable as hamsters should be getting a diverse mixed diet - there is excellent enrichment value in a mixed diet that cannot be replicated with pellets/lab blocks/etc.

Lab blocks are not necessary for keeping teeth ground. That would easily be solved by Whimzees dog chews. For the mix, Hazel/Harry Hamster really isn't that great. I know a lot of people here like that particular food, but it does have artificial dyes which are best avoided. Higgins Vita Garden is a much higher quality food.

Re: Mazuri Rat & Mouse Diet vs Rodent diet
If you go to the Website of Mazri it will also show it is no longer preserved with natural vitamin preservatives but since being bought out by Purina Pet Foods is now preserved with a Chemical called BHA which has been documented in many countries as a major cause for Cancer Purina also immediately lower the Protein levels from 18% down to a measly 16%. As of March the 23% protein Mazuri is still preserved naturally but Purina Pet Foods is known to change all produced foods to BHA and BHT preserved.

Re: Mazuri Rat & Mouse Diet vs Rodent diet
That is all very good to know, and gives further reasons to ditch the Mazuri as soon as possible. Purina unfortunately isn't really known for having the best standards in terms of ingredient quality and safety and while they're hardly the only company like that out there it does increase the level of concern and potential safety issues involved.
I don't know exactly when Mazuri got bought out, but I've been seeing serious ingredient quality issues and such in a wide variety of their foods since I looked deeper into things.

Re: Mazuri Rat & Mouse Diet vs Rodent diet
It's sad because all it is about now is $$$$. I still do offer a block type food because I had many hams(especially young ones) only eat their favorite bits in my own formulated seed mix. Mine actually go for the blocks first now but they are made with Wheat and Oat and are Soy free after I found a huge write up on how Soy can and does cause fertility problems in Male animals(including Humans) Interestingly I had a huge increase in litter size once I ditched the Mazuri and switched to Kalmbach 23% Rodent diet,
Not only did the litters increase in size but my young pups prefer it over any of the seed mix. It is made from Wheat, and Oats and is not as hard in texture as Mazuri. The crumbles that are always at the bottom of a 50Lb bag makes a wonderful baby and Mommy Porridge when you add in Kitten milk and warm water so nothing goes to waste at all.
