Default My winter white dwarf isnt eating solid( hard ) foods

Hi so i got my two hamsters 2 weeks ago , i initially had them together but decided to separate them because i observed that one was eating more than the other, one was more active the other barely came out of his house. So i decoded to separate cuz i thought the bigger( sparky the dominant) wasnt letting my smaller ( snowball) out of the house and was too territorial. After i separate them I see my smaller guys is still Hiding most of the time i do see droppings after night so he is coming out, incant see him peeing as much as the other does. And i have realized he doesn’t really eat his food unless i hand feed him, today he was so eager to eat but it looked like he couldn't chew the harder shells or bigger things so out of curiosity i smashed some seeds and cornels, some sugar free cherios and he ate ( stashed in his cheeks) all of it . It was the first time i have seen him so filled up. I have tried offering in past week freah veggies and fruits egg whites etc but he hasnt touched any of that either. When i take him out to a play pen he is very active runs around he is very friendly lets me pick him up he climbs on me all the time, he isnt aggressive or hyperactive ( comparing to Sparky he isnt active at all, he never used his wheel ( he has 8.5 inch wheel so definitly big enough and sparky uses his as well he has same in his enclosure). I am worries he is such a sweet guy ( my other hammy isnt that friendly we are still in a tamming proces ) their enclosures are nect to each other can it be that Snowball is still feeling threatened ? Should i move them to different rooms ? I am out of ideas here pls help he doesnt have any other symptoms, no wet tail, no diareah, vomiting , clean coat and eyes...

The obvious thing that needs to be checked is Snowball's teeth. Could they be out of alignment, overgrown or causing him pain? From what you say, he seems keen enough to eat. The wheel issue may be a result of not ingesting enough to give him sufficient energy, so he's conserving it for more important things. Or maybe he's just not a wheel hamster. Can you check his teeth?

Maybe try giving him chunky (but not too fatty) baby foods and like Petite said check his teeth. The important thing is that they aren’t white and instead a yellow/orange colour.

i gave him today the yogurt drop and he really loved it, but also after i made it into a smaller pieces .. he mainly eats seeds like sunflower, pumpkin, peanuts, cornels, but all once i take them out of shells and make them into small pieces, he doesnt touch any of there pellets even if i make them smaller, i am ordering the mealworms today maybe he would like these. i tried giving him salad, kale, banana, cucumber, carrots , apples, and he wouldn't touch any of it,

is it possible for him to be too young to chew hard things? he is a bit smaller then the other one.

just checked him , definitely they are yellowish/orange color and arent long so probably the theeth arent the problem .. maybe he needs more time adjusting to his new cage?
i have been moving things around as i am looking if he pees at all, and i cant find his spot yet, the other hammi pees in his tube as well as next to his water, so i know he does so i dont need to actually be moving things around.. in my small hammi i tend to look around to find it maybe i shouldnt but then how do i know if he has any water intake , the water is slowly and i mean very slowly going down in his bottle

I'd give him a water bowl as well. Some hamsters prefer to drink from a bowl. I use a glass tealight. The water needs changing daily or at least every second day.

Did you cut the cucumber into tiny little pieces?

I wouldn't move his things inside his cage too much to look for pee. One of my dwarfs pees way down in the substrate and because she's so small i only ever come across a small clump of dried up substrate when i spot clean every few weeks. No idea where my tiny Robo pees because it seems to evaporate.

You could give him a bit of plain porridge for extra nourishment.

I'd put him into a different room if you can and see how that goes. He may have been bullied by his sibling and hamsters are very sensitive creatures so may still be recovering and adjusting to his new and happier life.
He is lucky to be your hamster and to have a human who cares so much about him.

What kind of hamster mix do you feed him or is it pellets only? I give my dwarfs the Rodipet hybrid dwarf mix which is small textured. You could also give him millet sprays to nibble on. The bird ones are fine and the Rosewood pick n' fly bird/small animal variety pack is great. Linseeds are good for their fur and because the seeds are tiny they lick them up. Maybe this kind of added enrichment food would encourage him to take more interest in food without being handfed by you.

I bought two different mixes which have some pellets as well as mix of seeds and some dried veggies ... can remember the name but i mixed them two together in one big bag ... neither one of these was meant for a dwarf it just said on the package for all hamaters it has some tiny seeds there as well and i have seen him eat these ( i saw some peeled skin in his substrate while i spot cleaned) i did read online that there is some special food just for dwarfs and it containes mealworms so i ordered these last night to add to the mix i have ... i took him out last night and i took his wheel out and he actually used it while roaming in my room, its one of these silent spinners that has a whole in the middle so his legs constantly ate falling in there i am scared he can him himself, the wheel is made out of plastic and for most part is solid but in the middle of where he runs there is a small breakage ( its mostly for rats and mice to make sure their tails dont bent or something , Sparky ( the other hammi) has the same wheel and for some reason his feet never go into these holes and he runs for hours in it .. maybe Snowball needs to just learn to use it ? Anyhow i just bought a different one online One thats completely solid ...

Thank you for kind words i have a small zoo home lol, i own a senior dog, some fish in a 10 gallon aquarium ( had them for 2 years now) and a hermit crab also 2 years , and now these two hammies .. oh and two wonderful kids and they both adore mister Snowball he is their favorite , hopefully Soarky comes around soon and starts liking us
