Dietary Requirements
Hey! I currently have my second hamster called Milo and my first male pet! Anyway, I'd love to know more about hamster's dietary needs so could some experienced members help me with the basics please such as percentages, categories etc. Thank you!

Re: Dietary Requirements
What specie is Milo ? Dietary requirements for hamsters depend on their specie.

Re: Dietary Requirements
The best option for Syrians in the UK:
https://www.rodipet.co.uk/pet-foods/...nior-500g.html
It's an organic food with no artificial dyes unlike Harry Hamster, and there are no pellets either which is very nice. I know some of the other Rodipet foods don't have quite enough protein without having added protein boosts, but at least with the teddy junior mix you get enough protein without any extras(but you can still add extras).

Re: Dietary Requirements
A lot of people feed Syrians Harry Hamster including me because it is a good food readily available in the Uk and has no added sugars.
I think hamster food is not unlike human foods where opinions also differ and some people eat organic food only avoiding all sugars, additives etc whereas others like myself aim to eat healthy food with restricted sugar intake but don't necessarily analyze food and don't worry whether its organic or not....especially not when hungry.
Interesting thing is that on a German forum the Rodipet food is not considered to be the best one and other brands are favoured.
I feed Rodipet food to my dwarves because its far smaller in texture and i could not find food for a diabetic hamster in the UK.

Re: Dietary Requirements
The Rodipet ones are a bit low in protein so that needs supplementing. For a good that contains everything they need and enough protein, Harry Hamster is a good basic choice. It does have some good ingredients - whole peanuts in shells and black sunflower seeds. While it may have some colours in it doesn’t do any harm and the pieces are a good size for a Syrian. So you can’t go wrong with it for simplicity and ensuring they get enough protein. Our first Syrian had it and lived to 2 years 8 months. After that I tried mostly organic and soya free diet (a mix of Rodipet, bunny dream hamster and supplemented natural protein). It didn’t make much difference to lifespan and diseases of old age.
I think for a new owner, making sure a mix has enough protein is very important as working out supplemented protein can get complicated and not enough protein can cause a lot of health issues.

Re: Dietary Requirements
I too use Harry Hamster. In my opinion it is the best hamster food available for Syrians in terms of nutrition.

Re: Dietary Requirements
It is certainly one that Hamsters like and tend to eat all of.
