I think the only way to get the Rodipet mixes in the US would be to have a european hamster owner buy it for you and ship it to the US. I dont mind acting as a shopping service for US owners but I think shipping would work out very expensive because the weight tbh

It probably would be pretty expensive for shipping, even for small packages 5 pounds/2.26ish kg or less. One website did list Parcelforce's cost at $61.27/48.95 pound for 25 pounds/11.33ish kg while 5 pounds was more than half that cost, so perhaps it'd be better for those needing insane amounts of food or for many people to buy things all at once to consolidate shipping costs. UPS definitely wouldn't be a good option, since they quoted at over 200 USD for a very small package size(5 pounds) which is absolutely insane.

Of course, this is all hypothetical and most people probably wouldn't want to bother with that nightmare. Luckily the UK has reasonable enough shipping costs direct from Rodipet, so UK hamster owners can have the nice things!

Sounds like someone needs to set up an organic hamster food company in the US!

I had an entire post written that didn't go through as my internet cut out right as I hit post, but since I can't retype everything from memory this is what we'll settle for.

I've considered making a company for organic and generally more natural hamster food, and while it would be a bit of a struggle in some ways it would be worth doing. I don't think I could manage it any time soon as I'm just not in any position to even try doing it, but I do eventually want to try and start up a business for more natural small pet treats(possibly organic).

The problem with organic is I wanted to be able to grow and dry my own safe herbs and such but to be certified organic it does take a lot of time to actually get certified and it just wouldn't be doable on a residential property, so I'd have to invest in my own farm property for what I want. I don't want to grow nettle personally though, as the stinging part scares me a bit too much to try it!

It wouldn't just be for hamsters obviously, since small pets in general are seriously neglected in the food and treat department especially in the US. So many treats are filled with unnatural ingredients, ingredients that are in no way biologically appropriate like dairy, and low quality ingredients too.

It is a huge undertaking. I thought about it some years ago and it's beyond my time and resources! We just have to hope some company gets the message!

I'm already planning on going into the pet industry for other unrelated products so I'll probably start simple with human grade safe herb/flower/etc blends once the business is started, of course that does require me to have my own little tester or multiple testers(possibly literal guinea pigs).

The only issue I can see with that is that some of the herbs can have smaller pieces than I'd like, but I'm not sure if anyone would consider that a real issue or just something I personally am overthinking.

https://www.herbco.com/p-576-dandeli...s-organic.aspx

That's a good example of something with smaller pieces, and while I'm sure it wouldn't be an issue for smaller pets like hamsters I'd have to run tests with larger species(where safe and appropriate for the individual species' diet of course). I will say right away the organic dandelion root is quite a bit more expensive than the conventional, especially with better sourcing like that one(Eastern Europe), so making products with ingredients from other companies could get a bit expensive in some ways.

Yes the cost is also an issue. On the other hand our hamsters seem to do perfectly fine with non organic good mixes generally - so it's not something to worry about really, but nice if organic mixes exist!
