Talking Make your own hamster mix?

Can I get some advice/ideas on what people would put into their own hamster mix for Russian Dwarf hamsters?
Thanks

You can find ideas on German forums, mostly;

HAMSTER INFO - Ernährung

^ I will stress extreme caution when creating your own homemade mix. They are expensive, time consuming, and potentially deadly if done incorrectly. It is much safer to just order a pre-made high quality mix online. My favourite is Getzoo (who also make syrian mixes) but Rodipet also stock high quality mixes (I recommend the hybrid version only, I'm not a fan of their other diets).

Both of these companies offer very high quality, pellet-free, species-appropriate diets. I used to feed my crew homemade diets, before i switched them onto Getzoo and in all honesty, I have never looked back. IMO, homemade diets aren't superior to either of these brands and unless you have a hamster who has very, very specific requirements that would require a diet tailored specifically to their needs, it really is not worth the hassle to go down the homemade route. The ingredients found in both of these brands - and for Getzoo in particular - are pretty much identical to the ingredients often included in homemade mixes and if you're in Europe to order them, I would recommend choosing Getzoo (or rodipet, if you prefer) over a homemade mix any day.

Making you own hamster food is quite difficult & complex, takes a lot of research & calculations, if you want to consider it the most comprehensive discussion we've had here is this thread which you might find helpful.
Has anyone ever made their own hamster food?
That was quite a long time ago now, I've continued to make my own mix since then but it still took more work after that to really get it right.

Where can I get Getzoo from?
It's sold out on Amazon and I can't find it anywhere else.

If you're in Europe, you can order it directly from their site HERE - shipping is €12.90, but IMO it's the best food out there, and it's worth every penny.

^ They also have smaller bags, if you don't want to purchase 2.5kg. Personally, I only have one Syrian - but I still buy the 2.5kg, because it saves you money overall and it stays fresh even with just one ham eating it.

I’m creating my own mixes however I don’t feel comfortable sharing the recipe at this point since I’m still working on getting the nutritional balance right

I would also recommend the Rodipet hybrid mix It has in everything that is needed and good quality ingredients. It's not cheap because the postage adds to the cost, so I get 2 tubs at a time so they last a long time and save on postage. It's probably as good as a home made one and is safer.

You can still supplement with "extras" - so for extras I give a nut twice a week - eg a bit of walnut or brazil nut. A pinch of linseeds on a separate little dish. The bag of Linseeds is about the size of a bag of sugar and it will last forever! A bit of fresh veg every day, and if you happen to have a roast chicken one week you can give them a bit of plain chicken or any plain cooked meat that have. No sauces or flavourings though.

So supplementing with fresh food can be better than making your own mix. You can also give them a bit of scrambled egg or porridge. Ours eat it off a teaspoon. They do love fresh food!

This is the Rodipet Hybrid mix - it's 59% organic ingredients

Thanks all.
I will look at getting hold of the food.
My Syrian and my Russian girl are happy to eat what I give them now but my Russian boy is so picky.
Out of the hamster mix that I buy, he will only eat sunflower seeds and nuts. He does have meal worms and he enjoys pieces of corn. He also eats all fresh veg put into his cage. He is very fussy.

Lots of hams don't do well on commercial mixes like that, at first they might look to be very fussy but when you switch them onto a proper mix you often see that they start eating & enjoying it all. So a lot of it does come down to the fact that most store bought mixes are just poor quality and don't replicate their natural diets well.

I do like the hybrid rodipet mix but if you have 3 hams I'd go with getzoo - rodipet is very expensive unless you only have one hamster I think. And if you're looking to get a Syrian mix too then the getzoo one does look better than the rodipet one.

My hamsters also don't eat all the food and are picky (my Russian dwarfs & my robos). Is there a mix similar to Getzoo in the U.S.?
