Water bowl or water bottle
I feel like since I joined the Forum I have nothing but questions!
Hopefully soon I will ave something more to contribute.
But tonight's question is water bowl or water bottle?
My hammie (when he/she arrives) will be housed in a tank/aquarium.
I already have a water bottle, but a bowl would actually be easier to accommodate.
So do I offer both and see what he prefers?
Or is this overkill?
What does your hammie prefer?

Re: Water bowl or water bottle
I give mine both as they're used to bottles when I bring them home but they all choose the bowl, sometimes they will use both so I wait until I'm sure they're happy to use the bowl before removing the bottle.

Re: Water bowl or water bottle
Our Robo is in a glass tank. I got the Ferplast Sippy bottle which comes with suction cups to attach to the glass tank and it works fine. Robo uses it fine as well. If you do use a water bowl I would have it on a shelf so it doesn't get bedding in and bugs grow - plus have the water extremely shallow (eg wider low dish rather than a deep one so they can't fall in and drown or get soaked). Is it for a Syrian or dwarf hamster?

Re: Water bowl or water bottle
I use the rodipet bowls which are the ideal size & shape.
You do have to be a bit careful where you put the bowl but tbh I've had less problems with bowls than bottles & find them much easier to keep clean.

Re: Water bowl or water bottle
I usually use water bottles simple because most of my hamsters have a tendancy to bury bowls and they don't all have platforms in their cages.

Re: Water bowl or water bottle
It depends on your cage set up obviously but you don't have to have a shelf, Zen used to have hers on a little lava ledge but the boys all have theirs on top of their houses & it works fine, once in a while I have to rescue Zeki's when he's on a mad house keeping mission but not very often.

Re: Water bowl or water bottle
My Pumpkin prefers a bowl - she used to use a bottle after I first adopted her when she was housed in a bar cage but upon moving her into her DIY cage, Pumpkin kept knocking over the freestanding bottle stand I had made when trying to find a solution to this I gave Pumpkin a water bowl and she preferred it over the bottle so would choose to drink from her bowl over the bottle - and she now has been using a water bowl solely for over a year.
I place Pumpkin’s water bowl on her Knuff shelf in the corner of her cage, to avoid her getting bedding in it or climbing into it. I use a normal sized hamster bowl for her dish filled with water (she a Syrian so is fine with it although would recommend a shallow dish for a dwarf). I now prefer bowls myself as they are a lot easier to keep clean and I don’t have to worry about leaking bottles like I did with all my past hamster who all used bottles.

Re: Water bowl or water bottle
I have only used bottles for all our hamsters. I did try a dish for our elderly syrian at one time when worried he might not cope with a bottle but he just ignored it.
Most hamsters will use a bottle. But with a tank you're limited to fastening it to the glass (some people use industrial strength velcro which is supposed to work well) or using/making a bottle stand - and they can be a fiddle if they get knocked over or won't stand up on top of deep bedding well. I'd go with a bottle and velcro or the Ferplast sippy. My favourite bottles for syrians is the 75ml Ferplast Drinky.

Re: Water bowl or water bottle
I am using a water bowl for my syrian hamster as well.
I changed to the bowl after I got my wooden cage and couldn't fix the bottles for bar cages into place anymore.
Though I did realise that my hamsters preferr the bowl over the bottle anyways because I guess they can access it easier or something.
I do have the problem with bedding in the bowl too but since I change out the water daily and rinse the dish with hot water I don't see a problem with that.

Re: Water bowl or water bottle
Once again thank you to everyone for taking the time to reply.
It helped a lot.
My boy came home yesterday afternoon, and although he found his water bottle and sniffed around it, he seemed a bit clueless about what to do with it.
I left him overnight to see if he would work it out, but today when i popped a bowl in (he has very deep substrate, but multiple platforms) he found it within minutes and spent quite a while drinking.
So I think it will be a bowl for us from now on.
