food substitutions? Running out quickly!
Hey everyone, I've got a male Syrian hamster called Toby, and I've got a bit of a problem in that I'm running out of hamster food and may run out before I get a chance to buy some more. Obviously I can't suddenly change his diet, but what is best to add to his food to bulk it up a bit before I can get some more?
Thanks x

Re: food substitutions? Running out quickly!
You can't really just add things to bulk it out without really messing up the nutritional balance, it would be preferable to use another mix that is as similar as possible for now until you can get more of his normal mix than just add things in to keep you going.

Re: food substitutions? Running out quickly!
How long will it take to get some more? A day? 2 days? Or is it mail order and more like a week? Just thinking if it's only a couple of days you could just put half the usual amount out. Providing you haven't cleaned him out recently or removed his hoard, he's probably got plenty stashed away. Then put 2 or 3 fresh extras as treats around the cage in various places just as a treat. Like a nut (monkey nut, half a pecan or walnut), a hamster treat, a small piece of cheese (tiny), that kind of thing. He'd enjoy foraging for them.

Re: food substitutions? Running out quickly!
If you can't always get your food easily it's a good idea to buy two bags, keep one in the freezer then buy more when you start on that second bad, that way you always have a plentiful supply.
