Question Nutrion

What should the % of each nutrient a syrian and dwarf need to be health and if the food you currently feeding does not have the right amount what foods that hamsters can eat should you add to get the right amount.

What food are you feeding? Some foods already have issues aside from nutrition(such as Harry Hamster having confirmed artificial dyes,or certain synthetic vitamins that can cause problems over time).

A good example of a diabetes friendly and dwarf friendly US food would be Higgins Vita Garden, especially in the new formula which has 15% protein(previously 12 percent I think!).While it could use a little boost,Pure Bites freeze dried shrimp would do well for this(lower fat than mealworms, plus the overwhelming majority of dried mealworms are from China which should be avoided).

Can you get to Petsupermarket as well?If you can they generally have Higgins products, and most stores carry Carefresh as well.Oxbow foods aren't that great(even garden select, which includes tomatoes which are generally considered unsafe, and it's quite high in fiber which could be problematic at the levels it has).Kaytee(the brand for FortiDiet which is loaded with artificial dyes and includes synthetic vitamin K aka menadione which isn't very healthy plus the GA is unsuitable)are quite the awful brand for food,so I'd change that out as soon as possible without transitioning at all(feed a high quality maltodextrin/fructose/sorbitol/dextrose/etc free probiotic that is completely natural and a little bit of pureed pumpkin for digestive support)as it is a very low quality food.

I wouldn't buy any more of the mealworms if they're from China(and if they are I'd just throw them out and never feed them again),as mentioned before. It's not worth the risk(China has terrible standards for pet products, and a lot of Chinese products have killed many pets because of these awful standards regardless of any manufacturer's claims you might see on some products). You can get the Pure Bites in stores in Petco,Petsmart, etc even if it means using only chicken, they should have shrimp too though.

Petco should have the Vita Garden in store,so as far as not being able to buy online goes you should be fine If it helps any, this particular food could technically be fed to Syrians and dwarf hamsters(including diabetes prone hamsters like hybrids). If you had to feed one food to both hamsters, this would be the ideal food for that. It's high quality,no unsafe ingredients(including no artificial dyes or unsafe preservatives),and not online exclusive!

I don't think i can get Petsupermarket cuz I don't think there is even one in Iowa plus the closest big town is the capital. The only thing I know about the meal worms is there alive.

That should be okay then,as long as the heads are pinched off to be safe(especially since you can feed natural but inexpensive foods just before they get eaten to give maximum nutrition) It's mostly the dried I'd worry about(pretty much always products of China or made in China etc).

It is unfortunate to not have a Petsupermarket, since they tend to have better deals on Higgins Petco should still have Vita Garden though.Alternatively, there are some retailers in Iowa who carry Higgins. If any are within a distance you could get to,you could call ahead and see if they do have any Vita Garden in stock(if they don't carry that exact product, retailers of the brand might be able to order it in).The official Higgins website has a store locator to check for that, although from what I've seen there are no listed Petco stores!

I don't think Petsmart carry Vita Garden, but they should have Sunburst(both got updated GA's and ingredients,so the protein boost is all that's necessary as long as you get the new formula).

What species is your dwarf hamster? If you don't have a diabetic prone hamster(such as a Chinese or hybrid)you might be able to use Higgins Sunburst.

You could still get the Sunburst for your Syrian, but for convenience feeding both Vita Garden might be best.As she's a hybrid(unknown genetic background therefore practically guaranteed to be a hybrid)she'll need a diabetes friendly food, which means feeding Vita Garden since you can't order online(other foods in the US have flaws, whether it be artificial ingredients or unsafe preservatives or hidden sugar or menadione/synthetic vitamin k).
