How many meal worms do you give you hamster? I just read a post that said three a week on another thread.
Luna would hate me if I gave her just three a week I reckon. She has a lot more than three a week, probably about a tablespoon a week (sometimes more, sometimes less) and it hasnt caused her to become fat or affected her in any way.
I've only allowed her to do this twice, so dont panic, I dont let her choose how many mealworms she gets otherwise she would live on a mealworm only diet!

Jaffa cake loooves mealworms !! But I only put 3 in his food bowl a wk because if he had more he wouldn't eat some of the other food.
He does get extra mealworms as treats though during playtime. So I spose in a wk he gets 3 in his food bowl and 5 as playtime treats
I never really count, I give one or two every few days, and sometimes more often... really depends... weighing everyone quite often and checking on muscular and fat structure... I never had a fat one... Pregnant girls and youngers get slightly more. Mine eat their food mix fine despite the frequent mealworms.
Mine have a huge tub mixed in with their food so its more like 3 or 4 a day... then I give them some extra mealworms as treats so about...... 5-8 a day and 35-40 a week! XD
as long as they're not fat and eat the rest of their food, I think it does them no harm... on the contrary... Insects must always have been on their daily food intake in the wildness... Weighing or just feeling the body of the hamster gives a good idea if he gets too much protein or fat( with peanuts sunflower seeds for example) or if he's fine, or a bit too lean/slim.
where do you guys get mealworms from? and how do they come? (like in a bag or tin or whatever?) i have no idea... lol xx
I got mine from Tescos - they were just in a plastic pouch, they usually come in little pots. Most places that have a bird feeding section will have mealworms
