sugary treats?
I was watching this movie about health call what the health and I found out that diabetes is not caused from eating sugar but a meat and animal based diet. Now I know that has to do with human health but does that also apply to hamsters cuz I know some dwarf hamsters are prone to diabetes.

Re: sugary treats?
I've never heard of diabetes being caused by an animal based diet. The reason diabetes often is claimed to be caused by animal based diets is due to the cholesterol and fats found within the meats. This makes the consumer more likely to put on weight and clog up their arteries which causes a whole myriad of issues with diabetes being just one. Besides that, there are multiple types of diabetes, one genetic, and one environmental. It has less to do with what specifically you eat, but rather the condition you keep yourself in. A vegan who eats nothing but junk food all day and lies around, is more likely to get health issues than a meat eater who has a balanced diet and exercises regularly. There's a lot of factors that go into it, and sugar is one. This is why you should avoid sugary treats regardless whether or not they supposedly cause diabetes. They're not healthy for any species anyways so it's best avoided regardless

Re: sugary treats?
Studies I have read claim that fat pockets in the liver are a major cause of the body not producing enough insulin and leading to ailments like diabetes. In fact I almost purchased a program from an infomercial claiming to show how to reverse diabetes using some kind of fruit. I am not diabetic but was curious if that fruit would prevent a hamster from getting it. I came to my senses and stopped before supplying the credit card number lol.

Re: sugary treats?
I'm not really sure how fruit would help tbh. There's really no "miracle food" and this infomercial sounds like false marketing to me. If you want me to get all technical with it, it's a strategy the health and beauty companies use called "The magic pill" in which they advertise something as being a fix all substance with no real logic or evidence behind it.
You can feed sugary treats occasionally in my opinion (though some would disagree). A yogurt drop every few months or so isn't going to hurt your hamster, and it's nice to treat them every once in a while. However, fruits should be limited to once or twice a week, and you must be mindful of just how sugary they are. All in all, no need to be so anxious over diabetes, but still be mindful and you shouldn't have any problems

Re: sugary treats?
Meat and animal based foods are definitely not a cause of diabetes. They can be unhealthy in excess of course(except for species which require a true carnivorous diet such as ferrets, cats, and dogs and even then certain things in high amounts aren't healthy).
Junk food comes in every single type of diet,as mentioned, whether you eat animal based foods or not. This applies to any species which is going to require some sort of animal matter in their diet, whether it be humans or otherwise.
At the end of the day, there are going to be inaccurate and misleading movies and articles.Take your time with any source of information, and do extra research to determine just how credible any single source is
Drago has a very interesting point mentioned, and it's something the forum definitely won't agree on.I wouldn't personally feed sugary storebought treats such as yogurt drops, but I will say that different fruit has different levels of sugar and could(depending on individual hamster reaction)potentially be safe enough for extremely rare special treats.

Re: sugary treats?
I find it difficult to know the amount of sugar in an item. I rarely give them fruit but I have a garden and they love the sugar snap peas. I imagine that is not very good too often either.

Re: sugary treats?
Nutrition information on various foods is generally available through government websites, but a quick search is usually all that is needed to find that information.

I would think doctors would be pretty credible since they have a phd and all but I'm more worried about wether or not I can give my hybrid dwarf hamster surgery thing like carrots or ham ham food that has molasses in it. Since I'm an idiot and did not check the label of the food.

Re: sugary treats?
I think doctors are credible, but sometimes it's amateurs and those who aren't true ethical practitioners that spread rumors and misinformation regarding these things. In our world of science today, nothing is truly clear. One minute you hear something is super good for you and will keep you healthy via a study, the next minute a study has determined it will supposedly give you cancer. You simply need to use your head and common sense, and choose what you think is correct based on the evidence given to you, and what logically, just seems legitimate.
Carrots are fine as a rare veggie, definitely not to be fed as often as say, broccoli. However, it's healthy and contains a lot of vitamins so to not feed it in fears that it will be the sole cause of diabetes, just doesn't logically make all that much sense! Molasses in food is best avoided, but there are in fact some high quality foods out there that do contain molasses and hamsters who are diabetes prone have eaten them their whole lives no issue. I'm quite different in my opinion of diet, I feel no mix is nutritionally complete for a hamster, therefore, theoretically many are suitable (with the exception of plain trash like kaytee, wild harvest, hartz, etc). You need to make a judgement call, but avoiding it really is the best course of action if you can. Again though, my opinion on diet isn't much agreed with, so you'll need to take into consideration what I've said, as well as the opinion of others and choose what you logically think is best. Hamster diets shouldn't be such a complex thing, it isn't all that complicated and you can usually get a completely suitable food just by mixing two or three different high quality brands (again a debated point, but it can easily be done granted you have a basic understanding of proportions and math )

Re: sugary treats?
There's a lot of research still going on into diabetes not all of it substantiated so not everything you read is going to be reliable or helpful.
In hamsters diabetes is largely genetic but you have no way of knowing if a diabetes prone species will go on to develop diabetes or not so I think it is always best to feed a diet that is least likely to cause problems, it's not healthy for any animal to have blood glucose levels that fluctuate wildly which is what happens when sugary foods are fed so it's always best to err on the side of caution & keep your ham healthy as possible by feeding a diet that only contains low levels of natural sugars & is free from any added sugars or foods that are high in natural sugar.
