Smile Best food mix?

I am aware this depends on the hamster species, but for I wanted to know what is the best for Syrians or what you feed yours. I put my mix in a plastic tub.

My mix for my Syrian is:
Sunflower Seeds
A few Yipees (Hamster treats) mashed up
Sweetcorn
Dried peas
Dried sweetcorn
Pumpkin seeds
Mixed seeds
+Fresh and low-sugar veggies
(Sugary treats are less common)

I am no expert, but if that is your hamster’s main diet, I’d be concerned. I don’t think it can be providing the correct balance of nutrients.

For Syrians, Harry Hamster is the best mix you can get.

Is that a treat mix? Do you have the nutritional values worked out for the mix? It sounds like a very low protein diet and I would be concerned about feeding it as a main diet. Hazel/Harry Hamster (depends where you live) is an excellent Syrian food mix and I would strongly suggest that over a homemade feed.

In my honest opinion, there is no "best food mix", no mix out there currently contains all the nutrients a hamster needs. I think it also depends of course on species, but also on age. The nutritional requirements of hamsters change drastically as they age. Many disagree with my viewpoint and have a specific brand they like, but I have my reasons for feeling the way I do.

Regarding your mix, I too am a bit concerned on what exactly the nutritional values are. There's a bit more to creating a homemeade mix than just throwing several ingredients together. The mix has quite a bit of sugary ingredients (corn, peas, yipees, and fruits). It's also very heavy on the corn. I think it's an okay start, but some more research and alternative ingredients will be needed to make it complete. Best wishes

I would also recommend using a commercial mix. Harry Hamster has all the required vitamins and nutrients in and is sugar free. It has sunflower seeds and monkey nuts in as well so some tasty bits in it. It would be much safer than feeding your own mix. Some people do feed their own mix but it takes a lot of working out to get the protein and nutrients correct - and the protein bit is difficult. Syrian hamsters need at least 18% protein in their mix. 18 to 22% ideally in their first year. Without enough protein they can develop all kinds of conditions.

So I would not feed your mix. Give the yippees and sunflower seeds as occasional treats and buy something like Harry Hamster as the regular mix. You can also supplement with fresh veg every day (just a small piece, sort of 1cm cube size-ish of either broccoli, carrot, cucumber, cauliflower or green beans are my usuals). And protein treats can supplement the protein - eg pecan nut, brazil nut, a small piece of cheese or plain cooked chicken (again very small).

Zooplus also sell a mix that is quite good

Bunny HamsterDream Basic | Free P&P on orders £29+ at zooplus!

I would go with Harry Hamster though. Most Syrians like it - the pieces are the right size for them. It was the only mix our last Hamster would eat all of.

Most of those ingredients are unnecessary with Harry Hamster.Extras should never be included in your main diet already, otherwise you're just going to create several problems including an imbalance and a lack of dietary variety.

As Amity says, adding things to the mix will affect the balance of the nutrients so best not to. Is it actually Harry Hamster or the Pets at Home "version" own brand? Because their own mix isn't really good enough in terms of nutrients and quality.

Thanks, I will slowly (Because I am aware you can't have sudden diet changes) change it to just Harry Hamster, but with added vegetables occasionally.
