Default Cat food

Mushu loved the Applaws chicken wet cat food for cats, but I could only find the applaws wet chicken cat food for kittens today. Is it ok to give him?

That should be fine You can freeze any of the canned food that won't get used within a day or two of being refrigerated after opening.

Thanks Amity... I don’t think my two cats will let me freeze the leftovers though

Good point about the cats not letting you freeze the leftovers!I haven't personally tried Applaws with my picky cats, but I'm sure yours will love it

They adore the adult cat version, so I’m sure they will love this one too!

Applaws is the one I usually try to go for with my hamsters and I'll usually freeze what we won't use in ice cube trays and then just take one out as I need it. One ice cube will normally be enough to give a portion size to two of them.

There's a couple of other brands of cat food that seem to go down well with hamsters but the names escape me at the moment.

I think Almo Nature might have some hamster safe formulas.I know Lily's Kitchen is good as well, although I can't remember any other cat foods in the UK that are high quality but also hamster safe

I might try and organize a list based on what P@H list online at some point.Unfortunately a lot of higher quality cat safe foods aren't hamster safe, often because they include spices(cinnamon is especially common)or in some cases more exotic proteins that are excellent for cats but not so great for hamsters(lamb, quail, pheasant, etc).

Of course, there are general guidelines to follow with any food such as no derivatives, digest, etc(unspecified therefore unsafe biproducts even including "liver" and animal liver),unspecified preservatives(E&C approved is quite likely to be BHA/BHT/ethoxyquin which are known to cause cancer),and of course no artificial dyes or flavors nor should there be any processed sugars or artificial sweeteners(maltodextrin, dextrose, sorbitol, etc).

I'm on the fence about xanthan gum, guar gum,and carrageenan though.I forgot whether or not they're safe for hamsters, but it's likely that they aren't.

Amity I think a list of hamster safe cat foods would be really useful! I have found the list of hamster safe baby foods that someone created on here invaluable.

I think it would be useful too It's just going to take a lot of time, especially if the guar/xanthan/carrageenan issue isn't solved soon.Of course,I thought my diabetes friendly US biscuit list was going to take more time as well so I could be wrong!

The other difficult part of this is figuring out safe meats. This is especially true of things like fish where opinions vary, and while other meats are simple to determine safety on it's hard to say for sure with other things like fish as mentioned or more exotic meats(quail, pheasant, etc which I'd generally not consider safe for hamsters but perhaps I'm wrong!).

Neither Mushu, or the cats enjoyed the kittens applaws as much as the adult version. I think they prefer the adult applaws, because it contains larger chunks of chicken. All the chicken is minced almost into pate in the kitten version.

This is the applaws multipack that I bought before. The only problem with it is that only 2 of the 5 packs it contains are just chicken flavour. One is chicken & lamb, the remaining 2 are chicken & duck. I did not know whether the chicken & lamb or chicken & duck were safe to feed, so I could only give Mushu 2 of the 5 packs (obviously he only got a tiny bit - not a whole pack! My cats ate most of it - bar half a teaspoon). Would appreciate some advice on this.
