Default Hemp Seeds

I saw that hemp seeds are good for hamsters so I bought Mushu some. There was a choice between shelled or unshelled; I went for unshelled because he doesn’t seem to have the hang of shelling nuts yet and I figured he might not shell the seeds either. I only just saw that most people feed hemp seeds in shell. Are shelled ones ok too? The packet says 100% shelled hemp seeds with nothing added.

These are the ones I bought: Shelled Hemp | Superdrug

They're fine, nutritionally they're the same.
I prefer to give them in the shell as anything in the shell is good for their teeth & getting to the treat inside can be considered a form of enrichment encouraging natural behaviour.

Thanks. Thought it was better to be safe than sorry and ask. If Mushu likes them, I think I will definitely get him the ones in shell next time as they were not only cheaper but keep fresh longer. I can always shell them for him if he won’t - that’s what I have to do with his peanuts!

Do you make a small hole in the peanuts?
I make just a tiny hole at each end, he should be capable of doing it if you leave them for a while, he's probably just being a bit lazy

So far I have only tried leaving the monkey nuts in his cage for a few days. I never thought to make a hole in them! I will try that next time, thanks.

I do think he is getting more into gnawing things anyway. He used to ignore his seed bar and dried corn on the cob, but he now will take a nibble occasionally. So, I have great hopes

Those are the same shelled hemp seeds I had for Charlie. They are kind of light and fluffy and easy to lick up Charlie liked them - I used to put a little bit out once a week.

Well, the hemp seeds weren’t a great success... But they weren’t a disaster either. He took a nibble or two, but wasn’t much interested beyond that. Maybe they will grow on him!

Aww that's a shame, my boys go mad for them. It's probably the favourite treat here.

I sometimes think it can take more than one go with something new, hopefully he'll be more enthusiastic next time he tries them

I bought him some hemp seeds in shell this afternoon on the off chance he might prefer them...

When I went into his room to put them away he was up! This is at 3pm in the afternoon, which is odd. Maybe he got too hot in his house as it is a warm day?

Anyway, I decided to offer him a few and he took the in shell seeds very enthusiastically! Strange little guy. I bet he knew that I had spent 8 quid on the shelled ones and was being deliberately perverse!

Lol that sounds about right AP I think they secretly laugh at us "stupid hoomans", I'm sure mine do anyway lol.

He might have been too hot, I barely seen my boys yesterday during the day which is unusual, but it was pouring with rain and dark so they obviously felt they'd be better off in their beds :P (can't say I blame them, I would too if I was a hamster!)
