Dog biscuits for a hybrid dwarf hamster
Hi other than whimzee what other hard dog biscuits are suitable for a hybrid?

Re: Dog biscuits for a hybrid dwarf hamster
Both Biscrok Original and Bonio are both supposed to be good for hamsters due to what I believe is a low salt content compared to some of the other brands on the market. I tend to buy the Biscrok Originals for my hamsters as they're the brand that are used in show pens. My hamsters seem to like them although some owners say that their hamsters have preferences for certain flavours.

Re: Dog biscuits for a hybrid dwarf hamster
I wouldn't use Biscrok or Bonios.Find a high quality all natural biscuit instead with no added sugars,or make your own,but don't use something with questionable ingredients
For example Biscrok include several unspecified ingredients("Meat and Animal Derivatives" meaning not just meat but also biproducts which are unspecified so should automatically be considered unsafe,as not all biproducts are safe along with "vegetable derivatives" which could mean anything safe or not along with "seeds","herbs","cereals","oils and fats" which are all unspecified therefore unsafe as well along with unspecified "antioxidants and preservatives" which could and most likely are cancer causing BHA/BHT/ethoxyquin which shouldn't even be fed on rare occasions).

Re: Dog biscuits for a hybrid dwarf hamster
I honestly have no idea where this recipe is from, but it's saved on my computer when I was dog-sitting:
Ingredients:
3 cups flour
1 cup peanut butter
1/2 cup oats
1/4 cup grated carrots (optionial, or any other safe veggie)
1 tsp baking powder (don't use for hamsters)
1/4 cup water
Directions: Preheat oven to 350 F. Combine ingredients, roll out, and cut out with cookie cutters. Bake 10 minutes. Then, flip cookies over, and bake until golden brown (usually about 10 more minutes). Cool and serve.
Think it would be ok for hamsters? But is baking powder safe?

Re: Dog biscuits for a hybrid dwarf hamster
You could do it without baking powder for hamsters.Otherwise it would be perfectly safe!

Re: Dog biscuits for a hybrid dwarf hamster
In show pens, Jasper has always ignored the Biscrok originals ones, but I know he loves the Biscrok Milky Biscuits ones so I would recommend those. I've seen ErinsAnimals use them for her hamsters in the past, so that's where I got the idea. Jasper enjoys Whimzees as well and they are always a massive hit with hamsters.

Re: Dog biscuits for a hybrid dwarf hamster
My hamster loves whimzees... I've given him biscuits out of the pick & mix style dog biscuits things as you can choose specific biscuits... I've heard that hide chews are NOT good for hamsters sorry im not much use but there you go...

Re: Dog biscuits for a hybrid dwarf hamster
Rawhide isn't even safe for dogs, let alone hamsters or other animals.Naturally shed high quality antlers(deer, elk, etc)could also work, but not really as a chew that gets left in a cage.
The most important part of dog biscuits and any other treat for that matter is knowing exactly what is in them, but unfortunately in a lot of cases some ingredients aren't specified or in other cases no ingredients are really specified.Biproducts/derivatives/digest for example can all be extremely dangerous, considering there's no real specification in terms of what exactly is used.It could be something healthy like liver(only good if specified, not good if just listed as liver alone)or heart, lungs, etc(again, must be from specified sources otherwise they're not good).
