Nuts!
Hi Everyone.
Well I've recently discovered that Khali LOVES brazil nuts. She also has hazelnuts, but she really goes potty for the brazils. It is ok to feed her one of these daily or should it be a few days apart? She has her daily dose of brocolli and some chopped up grapes every few days as well

Re: Nuts!
Any unsalted nuts are fine, though I'm not sure I'd give a whole Brazil nut every day! You don't want to spoil her appetite for her regular hamster food They're quite easy to break - perhaps you could give her a quarter a day?
Alternatively, make her work for it! Inky has found Brazil nuts and walnuts in shells a bit too hard to get her teeth through, but hazelnuts are a good size and she can eventually get through the shell - it takes a few days but it clearly keeps her occupied as we have several hazelnut shells covered in teeth marks with a hole at the top where she has eventually managed to work it through

Re: Nuts!
A little piece of Brazil/hazelnut daily won't hurt, but nuts are high in fat so a whole one daily would be a bit much! However, just a little daily would definitely benefit her

Re: Nuts!
Just out of curiosity, do the nuts go off? Are the ones in shells always unsalted?
I want to try Pixie and Tinkerbell out on some nuts, neither care for walnuts in shells but go nuts for the nut itself, I figured I could try some with shells that aren't so tough, but I'm worried about them going off- I have got air tight containers ready and waiting, but I'd buy in bulk so I had a stash (everything for the hamsters is brought in bulk (works out cheaper for me) and put into air tight containers, plus I buy "human grade" nuts etc, as my friend often finds his way into them when he "treats" the girls, plus I feel like human grade nuts etc (unsalted of course) are always far better quality!)

Re: Nuts!
Nuts do go off,but luckily in most cases it's easy to tell by sight if something is still good or not. They tend to stay good for a while though, especially in an airtight container!
Nuts in shell are often salted, especially when they're meant for human consumption.Just check the ingredients,as you should with any food product, and you should be fine
I would definitely avoid buying nuts in shell in bulk,as they will go bad if left too long, but if you keep it to a small amount(1-2 pound or around half to just under 1kg)and store them in an airtight container it should be fine.Sometimes bulk products are good, other times they're not worth it and will go bad before they're even mostly used

Re: Nuts!
Nuts usually last long, and even more if they're in the shell, but you can tell when they went off because they have a very particularly rancid smell (like a very strong smell of oil)
Answering the thread question... I wouldn't give her a whole nut everyday either because that way she could become overweight soon

Re: Nuts!
I think one brazil a week would be plenty! It should last her a little while & that way it remains a treat not an everyday food.
