Re: Best Syrian diet
If it's for a dwarf hammy, Burgess Dwarf Supahamster is good LadynTramp. It's a Uk product but it's available on Amazon in the US. It's sugar free, the pieces and seeds are good sizes for dwarf hammies and it contains extras like mealworms. I don't know of any actual probiotic foods but I think there is a probiotic you can buy for hammies. I don't like the dried banana chips and so on in some mixes as not only are they sugary but have preservatives in too.
Well it was available quite reasonably priced but now seems a bit expensive. It is a specific dwarf hamster mix though.

Re: Best Syrian diet
And I was wondering. Would it be ok for a sirian to feed him Burgess Dwarf?
I would like to feed Blacky a mix that doesn't have pellets, but I would like it to be enough by itself (I mean, with a good composition, not unbalanced, I know that extras like fresh vegs are necessary anyway). Now he's eating HH too, but I would like a more natural food, and Burgess Dwarf looks like it only has seeds, or at least that's what I saw on pictures.

Re: Best Syrian diet
Hamsterita the burgess dwarf is largely seeds but also has grass pellets & flakes (soya, pea & wheat I think) most hams don't eat the grass pellets but that does reduce fibre levels & probably protein slightly too.
As far as ham mixes go it is more natural than some but not all syrians enjoy lots of small seeds.

I posted some links to probiotics in your other thread here. http://www.hamstercentral.com/commun...62-post10.html

Re: Best Syrian diet
I didn't know about the grass pellets. Anyway Blacky doesn't eat the grass pellets in the HH either. I don't care about the flakes, they are natural too. He likes sesame seeds and the tiny seeds that the HH has... but obviously I don't want to give him an unsuitable food.
Now that you're telling me about ingredients that I didn't know it had, has the regular one mealworms on it?

Re: Best Syrian diet
What about selective feeding with these mixes? I know when I bred rabbits we gave them a pelleted feed to prevent this. Is this not seen as the best way with hamsters? Genuine question from a newbie here.

The reason pellets/lab blocks are not good for hamsters is that they're naturally foraging animals. Rabbits and such on the other hand (which I also am owned by) are grazing creatures and thus don't really search for seeds, nuts, and fruits like a hamster would . Hamsters are also built to digest this and get more nutrients this way! Lab blocks are an excellent addition to the diet, but shouldn't be their sole diet, at least in my opinion!

I do have Higgins Sunburst, but unfortunately it has fruit inside the mix. Kilian has a really sensitive stomach and can't eat fruit.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I know with my piggies that I exclusive,y use Pro-C probiotic simply because it's so easy to get in my area if I need it. I haven't seen a hamster safe probiotic though, because it's normally fed after a course of antibiotics.

Burgess Dwarf is perfectly fine to give a Syrian as long as they like the ingredients. It certainly looks a lot higher quality and more natural than most foods, but sourcing it might be a problem for you, not to mention the price tag associated with importing it. It is fine to feed on its own, if Blackt is eating most of it. The only extras necessary would be fresh veg and the occasional treat.

If Blacky enjoys smaller seeds, then Burgess Dwarf would be perfect for him. I think both of them contain mealworms in but the regular one isn't supposed to be as good. I can't remember why off the top of my head. You can definitely check the ingredients on the Burgess website.

I posted an ingredients list earlier on this thread so you can double check, but from what I've read, it doesn't appear to contain any fruits
