Re: Best Syrian diet
Interesting to hear that it isn't such a favorite everywhere. The whole reason I had created this thread in the first place was due to me looking at Hazel's analysis and feeling that the protein was quite low for such a praised food. I guess I've always felt hazel is a fine food as long as protein is supplemented (especially in young hamsters) I guess the question I have now is that is it really "unsuitable"? I feel it would be a stretch to place this food on the same list as brands like kaytee which are packed full of dyes, sugars, chemicals, and have zero nutritional value. I want to ensure I feed my hamsters the best and make sure advice I give is all correct! I really wish a company would make a genuine 100% complete diet for hamsters,of course they'd still need fruits and veggies, but it would make things so much easier.

Re: Best Syrian diet
Interesting. Everything I've read speaks of the differences between the two as well as a reformulation.
I may just contact the company as well for clarity. Either way I personally didn't like the mix, and I think there are mixes better suited to hansters' needs but I'd prefer to know factual information!

Oxbow is not really great for hamsters; i would drop it from your mix. Hamsters don't eat hay naturally and it's not formulated properly to suit their needs. It's just lowering the protein in your mix.

Interesting things are changing so much, thanks for the link

Re: Best Syrian diet
I don't know if the formula was changed at some point or not - it's been the same one for quite some time and the ingredients seem the same on Harry H to me - maybe listed in a different order. But the two are identical formulas. They repackaged it as Tiny Friends Harry Hamster a year or so ago. It seems exactly the same as it always has to me. I think it might have changed slightly at some point as there used to be loads of those black logs in that hammies would ignore (mostly fibre I believe) and they don't seem to be there any more - but the nutritional values are the same. It seems to be a Uk company.

Re: Best Syrian diet
I'll do some emailing when I have some time off!
My issue with Hazel was how simply processed it was (not a fan of coloured nuggets really) and just that it lacked in variety.
I use a homemade mix myself with lab blocks. I use Higgins Sunburst right now for our older hams though I plan to make a specific older hamster mix for them.

Re: Best Syrian diet
That sounds good - I think Nancy uses Higgins Sunburst as well. There are quite a few biscuit type things in Harry Hamster so I know what you mean - I think they're formulated to Syrian sized pieces. Plus it has flakes and sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds and whole monkey nuts. We maybe have less choice in the Uk as well I've tried all kinds of healthy sounding mixes, including one without soya, that looked awful, smelled awful and Charlie wouldn't eat them lol.

Re: Best Syrian diet
Higgins is pretty good however it does need protein boosts for younger hammies. I'm not thrilled with it but as far as commercial mixes go it's pretty good.
I tell our adopters to get Versele Laga though again, coloured bits. But the protein is better in it.

Re: Best Syrian diet
Hekomi, I think your lab blocks combined with Burgess may be a great diet for Chinese or hybrids?

If you can get it yes. I feed my Chinese the same as my Syrians and robo. You can order burgess from VioVet. Shipping is however costly.
