Healthy hamster treats suggestions
Hi everyone, three days ago I got a new syrian hamster called Bonnie. I would like to start feeding her treats, to help progress with taming her. I am looking for healthy treats for hamsters to eat. I can not feed her vegetables for another week, until she has really settled in. I have heard Nibblots are good.Any suggestions?
Thank you for your help

Re: Healthy hamster treats suggestions
I had to look up Nibblots as I'd never seen them, they look ok but quite high in fat so you would need to go easy, most treats do tend to be high in fat tbh even natural ones, I would stick to natural foods as much as possible things like sunflower, pumpkin or hemp seeds (all preferably in the shell) a few flax seeds, you can try dried mealworms but not all syrians like them, tiny pieces of nut, even things like plain oat flakes are often liked & will be taken from your hand.

Re: Healthy hamster treats suggestions
Some good healthy treats may include sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, hemp/flaxseeds, very small chunks of safe fruits (nothing acidic or sharp), very small amounts of cheese, and the occasional walnut or half-walnut. Monkey nuts are great also
I looked up Nibblots and I agree with Cypher, they do look very high in fats, so they would be suitable to feed, only very rarely - perhaps once a month or so
I've never heard of alfalfa cubes before, alfalfa generally isn't recommended unless in very small amounts - I can't remember why lol

Re: Healthy hamster treats suggestions
Alfalfa is not at all necessary or really all that beneficial, you're better off just spending the same money it would take to get those on fresh vegetables!
Another idea is freeze dried chicken, but you do have to be extremely careful to get a good brand that isn't adding in all sorts of unnecessary ingredients to these and they are actually cat and dog treats

Re: Healthy hamster treats suggestions
Something I found worked with Cleo was working our her favourite bits from her food bowl (in her case, sweet corn, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds) and when I fed her each day I would take those out of that day's allocation before I out her food in her bowl and feed them by hand.

Re: Healthy hamster treats suggestions
Velma's suggestion is a good one, I've done that too & even just offered some straight mix in my hand & they still seem to think it's a treat!
Alfalfa is fine in small amounts, some foods do contain alfalfa anyway & some chew toys so the cubes (I haven't seen them either btw) may be a bit too much.
