Hamster Weight
Hi there,
We managed to weigh our dwarf hamsters (Boris and Pasha) for the first time today, but are a bit unsure what the healthy weight range is. We have a couple of books with conflicting information.
The first book says that Winter Whites should be between 28-56g, with Campbells weighing in around 28g. The second book says that Winter Whites should be between 21-24g with Campbells around 30-50g.
The little guys (or big guys!) are around 12 weeks old now, and are both around 40g. We are wondering which book is correct, whether they are overweight, and whether they might not be Winter Whites at all.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

Re: Hamster Weight
Their weight can vary a lot tbh & I wouldn't go by books too much, as long as they're healthy, exercising normally & eating a good diet they'll be fine, my hybrid hams have been various different weights but I guess as an average they would have been 55-65g fully grown.

Re: Hamster Weight
Thanks for the reply cypher. Good to know that they don't need to go to hamster boot camp any time soon.

If they're from a pet shop or a rescue then it's more likely that they're going to be a Hybrid and the term is used to describe any hamster that has another species at any point in their ancestry.
With Hybrids, there's no real way of knowing what you're going to get as you just don't know how much Campbells vs Winter White they're going to have in them, however a fair few of the animals I've seen of both species at shows have been bigger than my Chinese so it seems strange that one of your books thought that Winter Whites should be between 21-24g.
My sister has a Hybrid and she weighed 56g for most of her life, she's getting old now so has lost a bit of weight but she's still over 50g.
