Re: Hamster safe birthday cake!
Thanks! I have to say I tried eating one of the sliced off tops, and it is a bit tasteless without sugar and fat ha ha - but I'm sure the walnuts and pumpkin seeds and the filling and topping will make it tastier to a hammy
Love the egg separating video! I just do it the traditional way, as shown on the video but must try the bottle trick!
I'm going to go and buy some Tofu to make a topping to spread on top, and will do the mashed banana centre last minute (or it goes brown without lemon juice - and lemon juice isn't suitable for hammies).

Haha I have always done it like that, not sure where I saw it the first time, but it's quite handy!
It works quite well with people like me who keeps breaking the yolk doing it the traditional way!

Re: Hamster safe birthday cake!
Maybe we should start a hamster recipes thread for cakes etc.

Re: Hamster safe birthday cake!
That looks really impressive! Charlie is going to have a wonderful birthday.
Do you suppose it would freeze well? Maybe it would be fun to put little blobs of mix on a baking tray like mini muffins, then freeze some for later!

Re: Hamster safe birthday cake!
It would freeze once cooked - I actually froze them and defrosted them today ready for "icing".
Here is the finished cake - it looks a little bit like a cheeseburger lol! I gave up on the Tofu idea - I did find some in the supermarket, but wasn't sure about what to do with it plus it said it contained calcium something or other as well and I wasn't sure about that.
So - the filling is - a few hammy chocolate drops melted in a very small amount of boiling water, then porridge oats mixed in to make a paste (ie chocolate porridge!)
The topping is mashed banana with grated coconut on top (I happened to have some fresh coconut pieces in the fridge). And a dandelion root for a candle - although really there should be two candles.
It does look a bit like a cheeseburger with that choice of filling and topping lol!
More photos of Charlie eating it on his thread.

Re: Hamster safe birthday cake!
I might have to give that a go for James's first birthday in August.
Thanks for the recipe.

Re: Hamster safe birthday cake!
You're welcome! The cake is probably quite boring! As it's not sweet. Charlie seemed more interested in the filling and icing. For a dwarf hammy it might be easier to leave it as a cup cake and just have a topping - only one topping/filling to find then - it's hard finding sugar free filling/topping ideas so I gave up and used hammy chocolate drops. But having a cake base is good if it can look like a cake Another hamster would probably have dived in and pouched the lot - Charlie is more delicate (picky!) with what he eats lol. He licks at things and nibbles them.
Grated coconut on top was nice though, and I did think of mixing cornflour with rice milk or oat milk to make a kind of white icing - but ran out of time
