I think it's also a throwback to lead piping - when people started to realise the dangers of lead piping, it was gradually replaced but maybe only be the cold water to the kitchen. I know I was always told not to use the cold water in my grandparents' bathroom for brushing my teeth but to go down to the bathroom, because the pipes upstairs were still lead pipes.

Re the water- the plumbing in the UK and the States will differ due to UK heating with radiators and USA/Can heating with forced air, and the style of house. Most Uk plumbing will have an attic tank that gravity feeds toilets, hand basins, showers and the boiler and radiators. The only tap that you can be sure is off the mains is the kitchen cold. You should never drink the cold in the other taps. The attic tank is not sanitary.
The States, at least in the west in bungalow/ranch type detached houses, will have a hot water heater that should be part of a closed system so is not as bad but might taste funny. It is more likely the cold taps will all be mains fed. Lead pipes are another issue entirely and do not matter if cold or hot, lead is lead.

Good point there. I think most Uk homes have combi boilers these days, which is instant hot water and no tank in the loft/attic. I don't understand how they work exactly so it may or may not matter lol. But I still like the idea of only using water from the mains - ie the cold tap downstairs. Lol Willow's Mummy - you have just reminded me why some people used to brush their teeth at the kitchen sink! We were always told not to swallow the water if we brushed our teeth upstairs.

Anyway - so sorry SKB we went off at a tangent there. The main thing is - it is an excellent reference for feeding when hams have difficulty eating and I have picked up some great tips from it. Sherbet is very lucky you are giving her such thoughtful care.

I thought a combi boiler just did away with the hot water tank upstairs? I dunno still have the old fashioned set up here. Still a good idea I think no to drink from any tap but the kitchen cold, for people and hams!

I thought I would share this little recipe I came up with to ensure Sherbet could enjoy a birthday cake on her 2nd Birthday (31st May). This method was created so even hamsters that are missing teeth or are having difficulties eating can still enjoy a special birthday treat but this can also be given to any hamsters for their birthday or any other special occasion.

Birthday Cake
I was initially on planning to make Sherbet a birthday cake with her favourite vegetable, carrots, but I soon realised I didn’t have any carrots, so I had to use banana instead. But this recipe can be adapted to use your hamster’s favourite vegetables or a piece of fruit can be used in the place of the banana. This recipe requires no cooking and takes around 5 to 10 minutes to make.
Ingredients – 1 ½ tsp of Porridge Oats, Mashed Banana (a slice), boiled water, grated walnut, crushed Sunflower seed hearts, and a finely chopped choc drop

Method – Put 1 ½ tsp of porridge oats into a small bowl, then add enough boiled water to make a thick porridge (allow to water to cool slightly before adding). Into the porridge add the mashed up banana (or your chosen mashed/grated vegetable or fruit), crushed sunflower seed hearts, grated walnut, and then thoroughly mix together. Once all the ingredients have been incorporate form the porridge into a cake shape using a spoon and place onto a hamster-sized cardboard plate, cut out from a piece of cardboard. To finish of your hamsters birthday cake sprinkle with the choc drop or any other treat, I only used about half of the choc drop and gently push into the top of your cake.

Finally give your hamster’s birthday cake to your hamster and watch them enjoy. This birthday cake is approved by Sherbet, who even licked the little cardboard plate clean. Here is a photo of Sherbet enjoying her cake on the her birthday last Tuesday, more photos of Sherbet enjoying her birthday are on my other thread (All About My Sherbet)

That's a nice recipe - and doesn't need chewing too much - excellent.

I've found some more products that might help avoid lots of crushing (I was going to buy a pestle and mortar or a nut grinder but saw these instead

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The same manufacturer also sells Linseed and other seeds already milled - I got the Linseed one in Holland and Barrett. And I think they do a milled nut one as well.

Plus Boots sell their own brand baby porridge (a packet of dry mix which is organic oats and millet porridge with dried banana and apple). And their own brand baby rice - also dried powder.

I also found this coconut powder to make coconut milk for porridge and cereals. It means there isn't the dairy issue and coconut milk is supposed to be high calorie, and this one is the proper one.

Thanks for sharing these food ideas and I will look into getting some of them for Sherbet, the boots baby food seems to be a good idea. I've just made up a large batch of crushed seeds and nuts yesterday which should last me about a month and I also just bought a cheap nut grinder.

Do you have a web link for the boots baby food? (Edit - Just seen you've posted them on your thread)
