How much hamster mix do you feed? If she has too much she may just eat her favourite bits which could be fattening.

Encourage activity. Maybe try letting her climb the stairs if there isn't gaps at the sides. My hamsters liked climbing stairs and free roaming the hall.

Okay, don't make her do something she isn't interested in.That only puts strain onto your bond with her which creates more problems than just her weight!Scatter feeding is great, keep it up.Maybe feed her daily mix as a small amount scattered. Then, have daily fresh vegetables but be mindful of which ones have more water content and feed those sparingly. If you feed the right vegetables in moderation, there are very few health concerns.Possibly cut out yogurt drops completely and go for fruit instead as a sweet treat, but of course that is something that should be fed no more often than every 3-4 days if not weekly.

Sounds like a plan, I'm sure other members will also have much to add! I'm not experienced in Syrians but the one I had loved his ball!

All my syrians love to stash their food. I try to feed a tiny amount each day (scatter fed) to give them something to do.

If you give them too much they may only eat the fattening yummies like the seeds but its quite hard getting the amount just right!

Do you have scales that you can weigh her with? It may be a good plan to weigh her once a week.

Perhaps cut out the yoghurt drops for now and offer her treats like kale or dandelions (leaf and flower).

You could hide her food in loo roll tubes folded over so she has to work to get to it. I put theirs in egg boxes sometimes.

The hamster balls are ok (imo) if they have the choice ie offer it and if she goes in give her 5 mins then offer her the choice to come out.

Best of luck I do hope she manages to lose a bit of weight.

I was going to suggest the ball for short periods of time. Then letting them come out if they want. But as soon as people suggest exercise balls certain members here argue they are bad etc.

Some hamster love using a ball others don't. Go with what your hamster is telling you.

I would definitely scatter feed but not too much. Try reducing yoghurt drops and increase other healthier treats like veg, occasional fruit (maybe every two weeks) or even things like mealworms. Letting your hammy in the ball is a great idea but see if your hammy wants to get out every few minutes. It's also a lot safer than free roaming. You could try a play pen, but they can be expensive.

Play pens are no more expensive than a ball.Actually, they can be cheaper if you make your own

Also the hamster in question clearly isn't fond of balls so that's a bad suggestion in general.

So most people are saying to scatter feed and I already do that so does that mean I should cut out bowl feeding completely ? And flowerfairy said that kale and dandelions are good . So you just mean like dandelions from the garden ?(i mean washed and everything) And kale , does it have any special benefits or anything because we have plenty of it in the fridge .Stairs might not be an option for me as she's a HUGE chewer . But I will try and test it out . And lastly thank you everyone !

Dandelions can be purchased from Viovet at a fairly good price Not sure on the link but I can get back to you with that, since then you wouldn't have to do any extra work. There are many different treats from Viovet that are really good, mostly the Rosewood products though. You can find the ingredients for Rosewood products through other websites though, since Viovet doesn't list ingredients for every product.Very useful when you're unsure if something may be unsafe since there are some products by Rosewood which contain unsafe or questionable things!

How much does she weigh? Syrian hamster's weights can vary depending on their diet, gender and where they came from. You can easily weigh her on some kitchen scales. An average weight for a fully grown pet shop bought Syrian is between 140g-180g.
