Thanks!

I got quite keen on brazil nuts as supplements at one point as they are supposed to be high in protein and have something in that boosts immune systems, but as Cypher pointed out they are quite high in fat as well (I think that was it) - so Charlie just gets half a brazil nut once a week

Mine do get animal protein as well as their tofu, I don't expect them to be veggie like me but not having meat in the house in addition to dried insects I use these.

Dokas chicken & rice.
Thrive chicken.

Where do people get their mealworms from by the way? I did buy the Rodipet power cocktail (mixed dried insects) and Charlie initially went for it like a lemming, but it did have quite a strong smell and he backed off a bit after a while.

I've had the cocktail from rodipet & the Mucki mix from zooplus both of which go down well for just plain mealworms I like these from viovet.
There's no guarantee with mealworms that they're worth buying really which is a shame, but at least those have a GA which is quite rare, I've tried keeping live ones but don't exactly enjoy doing it, I'm hopeless at killing things lol! Some cheap ones are fed rubbish & may even be kept on news print which the worms will eat so don't really provide anything much in the way of good nutrition for hams.

Most dried mealworms smell a bit like old socks but I think it's the other insects in the mix that pong the most!
I do sometimes get mealworms & crickets from Ratrations too.

Thanks I'll check those out - might be worth getting a tub. Hmm live mealworms - do they eat moths by any chance?!

I'd hope they wouldn't eat moths! The mealworms themselves can eat different vegetable matter,so when you're feeding them to your hamster feed some separately a bit before they get fed to your hamster so they're already loaded with nutrients.

Lol! I was hoping they would as I have a minor moth problem at the moment (just a joke really ). But apologies - because I think you said you had a pet moth once - so maybe a bit of a sick joke

I like some of the healthy treats that Zooplus sell - I have the dandelion roots and the oat pillows. The dandelion roots get snaffled immediately! So I only put a small one out once a week. The oat pillows were popular have first but have now become a bit "whatever" and sometimes left.

Does anyone have a recipe for good home-baked hammy treats?

I get mealworms from the bird section of pet shops or supermarkets. Or if I see a big tub cheap on Amazon. Ratrations also do a dried insect mix but I found that too had a smell.

My hams have had some dried sprats for a protein-rich treat. Some loved them, some didn't. I got mine last time from my local natural pet shop, but have also had them from ratrations.

I think there's a few been posted here before but I can never find them again! This looks simple & nice, haven't tried it yet though, I guess you could use different seeds if you wanted, mine aren't mad on fennel seed.

vectis mine are the same with protein treats, with insects or fishy things they all seem to have different tastes!
Zeki wolfed down a huge cricket the other night while the others turned their noses up
