Default Treats

I'm getting a little confused ... There appears to be 3 types of sunflower seeds?! There is Sunflower hearts, black sunflower seeds and white sunflower seeds ... Can any of these be given to hamsters?
Also, which DRIED fruit and veg can they have?
And am I right in thinking they can't have almonds? Or is it only almonds in shells? May ask about something else in a minute too ...

Good topic! I wanted to buy a bag of "white striped" sunflower seeds 5 lbs but it showed pics of birds & bird feeders so I figured they weren't for hamsters? Idk?

The black ones I saw weren't the stripy ones, which I thought were what they usually looked like?! I had no idea there were different ones LOL

I use striped sunflower seed for bird for my hamsters for over 7 years with no problem.

Dried fruit and veg - I normally use dried banana chips or apple chips or carrot chips (I get mine from zooplus)but these are feed in moderations

Almonds are generally considered unsafe so I personally I avoid these

Brazil nuts I'm unsure about them as I don't know if safe or not. I generally normally stick to peanuts (out of shell my hamster doesn't know what to do with a monkey nut), hazelnuts and walnuts.

Great thanks Sweep doesn't seem to get what to do with monkey nuts either! I usually have to open the top slightly before he will open it himself! Not tried hazelnuts yet, so might give those a go. I'm assuming you can get them in the supermarket? Sweep LOVES walnuts but he's only allowed them once a week! He thinks that makes me a meanie LOL

I tried to show Sherbet what to do also she tries to eats the shell instead of the peanut (she is not a bright hamster).

Hazelnuts - if you them from the supermarket make sure they are natural and un-roasted. These are normally found with the fresh fruit and veg.

I know my hamster think I'm mean when she get her treats but she is a greedy hamster always looking for food. If she thinks you are hiding something from her her facial expression is so priceless. Also she gives the same expression when I scatter feed it like she thinking why can't she just give it to me!
