I like the sound of shiny coats! Do you think it would be ok to add a bit of hemp seed or linseed to Charlie's HH Vectis?

There's a sticky by Starlight Serenity on the breakdown of mixes. It is from 2013 but most of the mixes are the same, although mainly Uk ones.

Mix Comparison

This makes me feel much better about the Hazel Hamster.

It's all very confusing sometimes! But it's nice to see a big company respond like in that letter - always a nice touch.

It makes me feel better too - about Harry Hamster. I had seen those suggestions before about it possibly having something in that wasn't good for hammies so I feel a lot better about it now

I just now kept up on this thread & not only do I think the difference between Higgins Sunburst & Higgins Garden should have been established from the beginning, but I also just read through the ingredients on Vita Kraft Vita Smart & there is no BHA /BHT & I'm sure it's the same thing with Vita Nature & as I was saying yesterday there is no BHA/BHT in Kaytee either.

Either way I've pointed out in other threads Vita Nature is still not as good technically for various reasons.Believe it or not,but there is clear evidence there that is obviously saying that Higgins is obviously better.

I agree with Kyriiliondaemon and I don't really believe that there is a right answer when it comes to which food is the best. I don't think there's anything wrong with knowing the nutritional breakdowns as a starting point but if your hamster is not eating every single component in that mix then surely those percentages are thrown off anyway.

I think that it's important to remember that however good of a quality food mix it is, it is not going to appeal to every hamster and in the time I've owned Chinese Hamsters, I've found that one loved Burgess Dwarf Mix when another hated it. I've had another who liked the Burgess Supahamster and I've had one who wouldn't eat muesli mixes full stop. I try to be guided by my hamsters as individuals and if that means that one of my hamsters is fed Science Selective as a main diet then so be it. She was happy with that diet and her condition had been complimented by a judge at a hamster show as well as by her own vet.

I give mine flax & hemp in their treat mix & they love it so I'm sure Charlie would love some too Serendipity, most hams do! It's good for their shiny coats & their joints too.

I have to agree that being guided by the hams (within reason!) is the way to go, the whole diet issue can get way too complicated, I have a personal interest in nutrition so it is a bit of a pet subject for me but I really don't think everyone needs to worry about it, just find a good food your ham enjoys & that's about it!
