Help...Very Underweight Dwarf robo
Hi Everyone,
this is my first post.
I have always kept lots of animals (currently at 1 hammy, 1 Pygmy hedgehog, 1 leopard gecko and 3 cats)
But i have just taken on a dwarf robo who is so underweight its horrible!!! I knew she(HETTY as i have named her) was going to be underweight due to neglect but i am still a little shocked.
Could you help with telling me what is going to be a safe and stable way of fattening her up a bit without making her fill up to quick and getting ill.
Ive heard porridge is a good thing to try along with a good mix of food.
Any advice would be fab! thanks loves!

Re: Help...Very Underweight Dwarf robo
I'm sure one of the experts and dwarf hamster owners will come along with some advice I just wanted to say I'm glad you took her on and I'm sure she will improve with the right care and love.

Re: Help...Very Underweight Dwarf robo
Porridge is good, make it with water though because hamsters can't tolerate lactose very well.
You can feed dried or live mealworms (I'm sure you have live ones because you have a gecko). When feeding live mealworms make sure you pinch their heads before feeding, because they can give quite a bite. You can use tweezers to do this if you're not comfortable doing it with your hands.
I'm not an expert on dwarves so I'm not sure which feed mix is the best, but hopefully someone can come and give you advice on that.
Hope she recovers soon.

Re: Help...Very Underweight Dwarf robo
Welcome to the forum & well done for taking Hetty on.
Once they have a good home & good diet they will normally gain weight fairly quickly, a good basic mix is essential, if she has any trouble eating it you could try soaking some in warm water but she does need the hard food really so hopefully she'll eat ok, porridge is good as a supplement but not too much as you do need to encourage her to eat her mix & not fill up on things that aren't nutritionally balanced so no more than half or third of a teaspoon a day I would say.
Mealworms are high in protein & fairly high in fat so a couple extra of those a day would be good.
A few sunflower or pumpkin seeds (preferably in the shell) should also help, you could add a few extra flaxseeds to her mix as well as they are really good for general condition.
Most dwarf hams really love millet so you could put a spray in the cage for her to nibble on, it has really good nutritional benefits so could help quite a bit if she takes to it.
They can only eat quite a small amount each day even when underweight so try to concentrate on quality over quantity but make sure she has enough to make herself a nice little hoard somewhere too.
Which country are you in? Can't really suggest the best mix without knowing what's available.
ETA forgot to mention small amounts of plain cooked chicken, boiled or scrambled egg, just tiny amounts, are good too.
Do you know how old she is? If she's still quite young then extra protein will be more important.
