Default Gravity bin feeder

Hi All

I want to know if anyone uses a gravity bin feeder. What are the pros and cons?

From my observations hams don't seem to gorge themselves - mine doesn't anyway. I can fill up her bowl or just put the recommended amount in and she will only take what she wants. I end up throwing loads of her food away because of this so I'm thinking about getting a gravity bin feeder.

Thanks

I personally would say don't do it.It's better to just scatter feed, plus gravity feeders are usually way too big for hamsters anyways and are completely unnatural. If you want the most natural option that is the most stimulating and the least likely to have waste,go for scatter feeding, but definitely I would say don't use a gravity feeder.

If you're throwing loads of food away you may just be feeding too much, if you use a bowl to feed it's normal to wait until at least almost all has gone before refilling so you shouldn't be throwing much at all unless she really doesn't like her mix!
I'm a big fan of scatter feeding to keep them occupied & encourage natural behaviour, it seems to make mine less picky if they have fun hunting for food rather than just sitting at a bowl too.
I don't really think a gravity feeder would work for a ham, they are generally way too big & probably even less suitable than a bowl.

My hamster eats but she doesn't seem to care much about food. I'm trying to tame her and it's really hard because of this! I read that you should change their food every day is that not right? Seems like a waste to me - sure if it's going stale after a few days but I seem to be throwing away perfectly crunchy bits of food!

No you don't need to change the food daily, it depends how much you put in (average is about 2 tablespoons a day for a syrian I think) but if you put enough in you can leave it three or four days.
Some hams aren't so food orientated, it can mean taming may take a little longer but I think in the end it's better if they don't just see you as a treat dispenser
