New ham hardly eats anything
My new syrian dex does not seem that interested in food. Hes only once taken a bit of cucumber of me but thats it. He wont take any food of me. Though he now lets me lift and stroke him now, hes fine with that. Just wont take food of me and ive tried all kinds. He does seem to like nuts. But wont take them off me. Ive had him about 10 days. And i started the handling after 3 days and ive taken it slowly. What can i do as with past hamsters food is usually the thing they are most interested in.

He may learn it's ok to take food from you, but it's good you can hold and stroke him. Is he eating well from his bowl etc?

Re: New ham hardly eats anything
All hamsters need time to settle in, and all are different. He could still be a little shy. If you started handling him quite quickly after you got him, he could have got a little stressed, which could be why he won't take food from you. He needs more time to settle, to take things in and to get used to you. He needs to learn to trust you before he can take food from you. Also, I wouldn't give him too many new foods, as it could upset his tummy and make him ill. I'd introduce them one at a time, and slowly. Also not too many nuts as these are really high in fat! They love eating them, but should only really have them as a treat (same as us with chocolate sadly!). Is he eating his normal food ok? If he is eating a lot of other foods he may not even be that hungry, so might be worth cutting down on those extras for a bit. But they all are very very different. He will get there in his own time, but for now you will have to wait for him to come to you ...

Re: New ham hardly eats anything
I dont really give him treats. I tried him with pumpkin seeds but he wasnt much interested. I tried him with a tiny bit of broccoli but once again he wasnt interested. I think he eats his mix not sure as i scatter feed. Im thinking of getting him a bowl just to keep an aye on what he is eating. Ive had other hams before hes the first not to be a greedy little so and so lol. I just want to know hes healthy and happy.

Re: New ham hardly eats anything
Have you tried just offering him some of his mix in your hand? If he enjoys his mix I'd try that. He may just not be food orientated though.

Re: New ham hardly eats anything
I have tried just about everything. He did take a piece of walnut of me last night. But nothing else.

Re: New ham hardly eats anything
He might still be nervous and so is a little scared to take food out of your hand. He might not know yet that the food isn't going to be snatched away from him if he tries to take it
