I'm not really the best person to advise on feeding a syrian as never having had one & not expecting to have one I haven't done the research I've done with the dwarf diet.
Generally though I know syrians aren't so fond of small seeds as dwarfs are, they seem to prefer a chunkier mix! If you look at the syrian mixes on Mixerama you can see they are similar in some ways but also tend to include a fair amount of legumes, & maybe more grains or larger seeds.

I finally ordered my Mixerama food! It should arrive next week and I'm getting my hammy on the 5th of June. I only need to get the Dokas chicken thing.

That's great news! Not long to go now before your ham arrives then.
Look forward to hearing how you & your ham get on with your mix, I've been tweaking mine a bit more & am just about happy with it now, I think the hams are too!

Yeah I can't wait for my hammy. What pellets are you feeding your hamsters? I remember you said you were testing some. So glad your finally happy with your mix.

I've found the echinacea, green oat, melissa, dandelion & dill to be about the favourite pellets, they seem to enjoy the milk thistle too although they don't get them very often, not so popular have been nettle & parsley, those are harder & shiny & look more like the alfalfa pellets you get in ham mixes so maybe they don't like the texture, who knows for sure with hams!

Smile Re: Has anyone ever made their own hamster food?

Ok thanks Cypher. I did end up order parsley pellets separately so I will try those with my hammy, but if he doesn't like them, I'll just give them to my guinea pigs. They love parsley. There are some nettle pellets in my main food. It's a bit annoying I end up ordering the least favourite pellets but anyway. I also got extra pea flakes as treats (my guins love them).

I think I'm going to edit the recipe after I get my hamster and take out what he doesn't like to make the perfect mix.

I do think it's a bit much to expect to get it spot on first time, I found it hard to visualise mine but with a few tweaks it's better & more well balanced than the original now.
Your ham may like the nettle or parsley pellets, if they don't get eaten straight away leave them for a while so your hammy doesn't start to get picky! I did that with mine to begin with as the pellets were a new thing & they need some nice healthy herbs, that didn't go fast at first but are getting both stashed & eaten now.
They do all have slightly different tastes so it's good to have a few things as extras.
Mine still love a little bit of nut now & then as well as a few extra seeds but generally other treats get refused so they must be happy with the mix, they look healthy too so I'm really pleased I made the effort.

Just took a look at that site - the fairytale mix has tomato flakes in! Are tomato flakes different to tomatoes? So could they have the flakes and not actual tomato?

It's quite normal in Germany to give tomato (only small amounts) pinkneon, not the the skin or seeds & only very ripe tomatoes, never anything even slightly green.
I still prefer not to as they are a bit too acidic.
