Default What dairy products can you feed your hamster?

Hey, so I'm going to get a new hammy soon, and I was wondering what dairy products are safe for them to eat? I know that they like yogurt, but can they eat stuff like cheese? I researched a lot on diets but most videos and pages I found where only veggies and fruits. Thanks a lot!

I assume they can have cheese that doesn't contain a lot of mold on it when processing/making it. I would assume that the Yogies! cheese flavor ones would be okay too. Not sure though. I only feed our fruits and veges.

Hello Nighty, and welcome to Hamster Central. Yes, hamsters like a bit of cheese now and then. It should only be the size of you fingernail and not very often. Hamsters also enjoy porridge (Oatmeal in the US). They like yogurt and and chicken (no spices on it). The link below is for safe and unsafe foods for hamsters.

Some hams enjoy yogurt but I have to say I've never had one who would touch it without a look of disgust lol!
Yogies or yogurt drops aren't really yogurt just in case you wonder, they're mostly sugar & fat & best avoided.
Hams can be lactose intolerant so you do need to be careful, low fat cheese is often recommended but is actually higher in lactose than hard cheese, a tiny amount of mild hard cheese like cheddar (never anything with mould in it!) is ok, I use lactofree cheese to be on the safe side but it's still a rare treat & not really a necessary part of the diet.

I think mine have only had cheese once or twice - they did like it but it's not something I would give with any regularity, not even as a treat.

They both like plain probiotic yoghurt though, and get a tiny drop of that once a week or so.
