Re: Besides Harry Hamster & Burgess what UK staple mixes do people use?
They don't actually say what's in the wellness sand which put me off for a while but then I decided to give it a go anyway, it's sand with added herbs just don't know which ones but it smells really nice!
I only got the small bag so I mixed it in with some normal sand & Flynt & Mickle both seem quite happy to use it, not sure I've noticed any difference in their coats yet, possibly some subtle improvement which they could both do with but it's hard to tell.

Re: Besides Harry Hamster & Burgess what UK staple mixes do people use?
I had been using Harry Hamster but have recently changed to a generic hamster mixture from my local pet shop. It's cheap and looks very bland in comparison to HH but both my hams seem to prefer it!
To it I add Science Selective pellets, oats, seed mix (canary seed, linseed and grass seed, all from Rat Rations), extra sunflower seeds, alfalfa rings, mixed dried herbage, millet and some extra protein - either dried mealworms or dog kibble.
My Syrian and Robo are both doing well on it.

Re: Besides Harry Hamster & Burgess what UK staple mixes do people use?
RODIPET HAUL!
My Rodipet haul arrived! It actually came on Friday so delivery was really fast as I had ordered late Monday evening.
Auratia Goldhamster Senior 600g
I have to say that I'm impressed. I can definitely see that the quality of the ingredients is much better than what I've previously had with both Burgess and Harry Hamster. It's also good to see they are not relying on just mealworms for the protein. There is also a greater variety of different things in the mix. It also smells very 'herby' . I do really like the fact that it comes in a resealable tub which is very convenient. The true test is of course His Royal Fussy-ness. I'm happy to report that he seems to really enjoy it! . I honestly have not seen him so excited in a very long time. Between the new food mix, toys, chews and treats my poor Spike was running around the cage so excited that he didn't know what to do with himself. The best indicator for me is that he always eats his linseeds first which I pile on one side of his food dish, this time he didn't touch them. He pouched most of the food and hid it in his 'secret' stash behind the wheel and then pouched what was left and took it to bed with him. A definite hit: Spike and his new mix
I'm not really going to go through all the items in my haul here as the Auratia Goldhamster Mix is really the only item pertinent to the topic. I have gone through everything on Spike's thread though so if you are interested here's the link : clicky

Excellent! Nice looking dead cricket there lol. Really glad he likes it! The little scoop it comes with in the tub is useful too I find.

Sorry to hijack the thread but your reply suggests hamsters can be fed a bit like rats in regards to eating most things just in smaller quantities?
I know a lot about rats but barely anything about hammies

Re: Besides Harry Hamster & Burgess what UK staple mixes do people use?
Odi unlike rats there are quite a few things hams can't eat, have a look at the wiki list for some ideas on what you can safely feed them, you do need to take care to keep the balance of their diet right so if you're unsure about anything just ask or stick to your main mix with just a few safe extras.
A little extra protein like chicken once of twice a week, tiny pieces, & a variety of veg, small pieces daily once your ham is used to them are the main additions to their normal ham mix.
