Hamster Beaphar Care + Food - any good?
Hello,
I was recommended by my local shop to feed my new hamster Care +. Missy [the hamster] seems to love it and eats through it readily, but is it as good as it sounds?
Cheers

Re: Hamster Beaphar Care + Food - any good?
Personally I'm always dubious about things that claim to be full of Essential omega oils and all that jazz.
Quoted from Description
The Beaphar Care+ range is the first, totally complete, super premium food available for the small pet, offering the highest possible quality and formulation known to man. The high quality proteins and Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids ensures that an animal will have a healthy and long life with out experiencing the diseases caused by nutritional deficiencies. The foods also contain prebiotics and Yucca extracts and the chelated minerals improve absorption and supply to the body.
Being developed in cooperation with veterinary surgeons, dieticians and leading rodent experts this food has to be the very best available on the market today.
The prebiotic is a fairly good addition. Not sure about the omega fatty acids, yucca extracts and chelated minerals.
Most people tend to use Harry Hamster Food, currently the only food recommended by the National Hamster Council. Apart from anything it's a fairly good mix. To be honest most of the general dry mixes are roughly the same, but watch out for ones high in sugar or disguised sugars (such as fructose) as these can be harmful to hamsters leading to problems with diabetes, cavities etc. As with any food change, if you do switch brand introduce the new brand slowly to avoid upsetting your hamsters stomach.

Re: Hamster Beaphar Care + Food - any good?
But I was concerned as with Harry I use to throw away bits the Hammy didn't fancy and so not only did I get a lot of waste but she wasn't getting a complete diet and so not getting all her vitamins etc. Harry looked a bit full of cheap seed and wasn't that much cheaper in the long run. We throw nothing away with the Care +
Plus I thought the Omega helped the heart which would be good as hamsters are prone to heart probs?
PS I don't work for Beaphar lol

I have seen this in our local shop.
Food is very much an individual choice and if Hammy enjoys this mix and is healthy, active and glossy on it then I would say stick with it. It will contains all essential parts of a hamster diet and I am sure she enjoys it

Re: Hamster Beaphar Care + Food - any good?
Hmmmm I wonder if it is worth trying my little Mo on this...
She originally had P@H Hamster Muesli as she came from there, and ate every bit of it - then I got her a new bag of it and they have changed the food, Little Mo decided she then didnt like it.
I then tried Harry Hamster and she liked that even less - loads was going to waste every day - not sure which bits she was actually eating
She is now on Beaphar XtraVital - but to be honest, she doesnt seem to like that either and is just picking at select bits
I'm worried that she is not getting a complete enough diet (although I do give her additional broccoly, nuts, and oats every day which she eats very well)
This Care + food might be a good option - just wish it wasnt so bloomin expensive!

My little fella is on P@H muesli but to be totally honest he doesn't seem to be eating everything from it i've given him some fresh fruit + veg and he'll occasionally have a treat or two.
If I can find this to buy from a store then I may give some to my special little guy.

My store does have a loyalty card scheme as I said it was a bit dearer, not great but does help. Plus obviously with the less waste it does go a lot further 5-6 grams a day 700g £4.99 117 days.
