Hamster not drinking
Hi,
I got my 2 month old Syrian hamster on Sunday. I noticed today that none of her water had gone down, not even a fraction.
Tonight, after she had been in her playpen I held the water bottle infont of her and when she sniffed I squeezed the bottle so the water came out. At this point she had a long drink. I had to keep squeezing the bottle to keep the water coming out because she couldn't figure it out. I know hamsters don't drink much but is this normal? Will she learn how to use the water bottle?

Re: Hamster not drinking
Sometimes the ball gets a bit stuck so they can't actually get any water out. This happened with one of my bottles & my Syrian couldn't get any water unless I flicked the ball first. Luckily I have a spare bottle for such things. Sometimes if you fill the bottle right to the top, put the lid on tight then give it a couple of hard shakes that can do the trick. But you need to make sure when you lightly put your finger against the spout that water comes out. I'd say she knows how to use it as she drank when you held it like that but as you needed to squeeze it for it to work, I'd say the bottle might be iffy or, like I said, need a good shake

Re: Hamster not drinking
You could also use a bowl instead, just put in on a shelve, so that the substrate won't get in the water.

Re: Hamster not drinking
Like Velma, I always keep a spare bottle.
I always check the spout and give the bottle a squeeze.
