They are rodent protein blocks. I brought 2018 Harlan Teklad which are 18% protein to make sure hams get the right minimum nutrients in their diet. You can get the 2018 or higher numbered ones. Granted I'm certainly no expert on nutrition for hamsters, I'm still learning myself. I've seen a lot of breeders and owners with a lot more experience recommend them so I brought myself a 10lb bag. Apparently hamsters need a lot more protein than I thought, I think the recommended minimum was 18% for protein in their diets.

I think you can only get them in the US, the closest we have is probably the Supreme science selective all in one food.

They look so nice, I'm going to try making some, minus the teklad blocks as I'm in the uk. I love baking so it'll be nice to make some more homemade treats for Pumpkin, I've made peanut butter and raisin donuts which he loved.

This is a great idea - I think they definitely like mini cookie sized things to nibble on. Charlie got some Rosewood shrimp cookies in his Christmas stocking and adored them, but they're not cheap to buy. Making them sounds much cheaper! I'm thinking of trying your recipe with savoury ingredients - flour, oats, grated cheese, sunflower seeds and maybe a bit of egg to hold them together (we can't get the Harland block thing in the Uk I think).

Is this the peanut butter you mean Cypher? I'd still be a bit worried about the salt content, but it is last on the list of ingredients so probably not that much in it. It says 1.1grammes per 100 grammes, so if 100 grammes made 12 cookies say that would be less than 0.1 grammes per cookie. Would that amount of salt be ok? I like the idea of peanut butter cookies!

Wow what a fantastic range of nut and seed butters! I wonder if our local Holland and Barrett sells it - I'll check.

Danni your cookies are amazing and a wonderful treat - I'm just being fussy thinking how I could make them salt and sugar free - it's not like they're going to be eaten every day or something!

Thanks!
Just switch out the peanut butter for something like mashed banana maybe and don't bother adding in the raisins (You can always replace that for one of Charlies favorite treats or something!)

That should lower the salt/sugar and make it a much healthier alternative. Adding egg white or the powder version of that will also increase its protein value.
