Pellets
I was sitting there ordering oil for our house (my dad asked me to) and an ad pops out. Blah blah blah try there tasty hamster pellets, half price for a limited time! I was like do hamsters pellets even exist? But i still had the ad in my head. And actually hamster pellets is not a stupid idea. Many complain that their hamsters picks only their favourite parts of their food. With pellets you wouldn't have that problem?
Any of you feed hamster pellets? If yes what ones? And what nutritional values should the pellets contain i.e. % of fibre, protein etc.
Thanks
Dave

Re: Pellets
I tried science selective & my hams wouldn't touch them!
I think the balance is about right in them though "Analytical Constituents: Protein 19.0%, Crude fibre 5.0%, Fat content 5.0%, Inorganic matter 5.5%" if you're ham likes them.

That's the thing I'm worried about- that my hamsters are not going to like them. I would have to bin the whole bag of food.

Re: Pellets
That's what I did Dave, binned the lot! Well they did go in the compost bin so not a total waste lol!
If your hams are doing ok with a normal mix I wouldn't bother, I personally think a mix is better, they have seeds to husk which is good for their teeth, they can forage & it just seems more natural & gives them more interest, a bit of picking & choosing is fine imo.
The pellets were the ultimate in selective feeding, no feeding at all lol!

Re: Pellets
You're right cypher. I'm just going to stick with the mix. They eat everything in it except the little brown things that look like pellets. I use the Harry hamster mix.

Re: Pellets
Harry Hamster is similar to Hazel Hamster, and it's a ideal mix for dwarf hams. As far as "Pellet" or "block" hamster foods, I'd take a look at the actual ingredients, too.. some I've noticed are made with a good amount of ground up corn.

Re: Pellets
If your ham is not diabetic, I'd say, corn pieces in moderation is okay, but if your ham is diabetic, no. because, corn is high in carbs which turns into sugar. A low carbohydrate and high fiber diet slows down the absorption of sugars helping to keep insulin levels steady and reduces the amount of insulin needed this keeps the variation in blood sugar low.
Although, I would not recommend, anything be taken out of a hamster's mix, unless, the nutritional value can be substituted with another food.
With my dwarf, it's vet advised that she not have corn, however, there are other foods that I add to her mix, supervised by a vet, to insure she receives the proper balance, of vitamins, and nutrition based on her individual needs. My dwarf has high glucose/pre-diabetes.
