Does anyone have any hamster recipes to make all sorts of treats. I love spoiling my hamsters :P

Hello Everyone! I had a request from one of our Little Paws Pet Club members for some fun hamster ideas and thought that I would start with this tasty hamster treat recipe! This is a fun and easy recipe to make and the ingredients can easily be changed to give your cute little critter lots of treat variety.

Mash some banana in a bowl. Add enough dried whole wheat bread crumbs until you can shape the mixture into tiny balls that are a good size for your hamster to hold. You will want this mixture on the dry side, but still moist enough to shape into little balls. You can also add some finely chopped carrots or apples, ground plain oats, wheat germ or flax seed to your mixture. Refrigerate the balls until you are ready to use them.

You can make endless variations of these hamster treats by using mashed potatoes or any type of baby food that is safe for hamsters as the base of your treats and then incorporating any types of hamster safe finely chopped or ground fruits, veggies, sunflower seeds or dry ingredients into the baby food until it is dry enough to form into balls.

Please note: Before incorparating any ingredients into this recipe, be sure to do some research to be certain that the ingredients that you plan to use are hamster safe. For instance, Peanut butter has been known to cause choking in hamsters as well as get stuck in their cheek pouches and should be avoided.

Making homemade hamster treats: Hamsters are omnivorous, which means they eat both vegetables and meat. Their natural foods include grains, seeds, vegetables, and insects, and they will like corn, oats, or wheat mixed with dry dog food. Premixed hamster food from a pet store has complete nutrition, but some hamsters won't eat it.

Their favorite foods are foods native to their dry habitat, like seeds. For protein and variety, they will eat some small insects.

They like vegetables, but be moderate in how much you feed them. The key word for the hamster diet is variety. It keeps them healthy.
Hamster Treats Recipe

1/4 a teaspoon of peanut butter
1 box plain Cheerios cereal
variety of vegetables such as carrots, celery, bok choy
small dog biscuit or stale or fresh bread
bird seeds and sunflower seeds
small amount of cheese

Spread peanut butter on dog biscuit, stale or fresh bread. Stick cereal on top and press in some of you hamster's favorite small foods such as bird seeds or sunflower seeds. Next, press in vegetables around the Cheerios. Press cheese around the vegetables to cover. Have fun hiding the treat where your hamster has to climb to get it.


Other treats that can be fed to your hamster include:

Acorns, Almonds (shelled), Beechnuts, Biscuits, Boiled Potatoes, Brazil Nuts, Bread (fresh or stale), Breakfast Cereals, Cake - but not chocolate cake, Cashew Nuts, Chicken (cooked), Cheese, Coconuts, Crickets, Currents,Homemade Dog Biscuits, Egg (scrambled or boiled), Fish (cooked), Hazel Nuts, Mealworms, Meat (cooked), Pecan Nuts, Peanuts (shelled or unshelled), Pistachio Nuts, Prunes, Raisins, Sweet Chestnuts, Sultanas, Toast, Walnuts

You should be careful not to feed too much sweetened food as these could cause the hamster to become fat.

Never feed a hamster any of the following:

Buttercups, Chocolate, Garlic, Onions, Rabbit Mix (containing antibiotic ingredients), Raw Kidney Beans, Sweets, Toffee
