baby food
I wanted to ask, in what circumstances do you feed your hamster baby food?
I'm thinking of feeding it to my underweight hamster, 88g Syrian who is about 5.5 months old in the hope it might up his weight a bit.
Is it the Cow and Gate(uk) grandpas sunday lunch the one you most give? How much do you give, how often, how do you give it in a separate bowl?
Thanks

Re: baby food
We feed it to pups, the elderly, occasionally the ill and to everyone as a treat if we decide we want to. We also freeze it and hand it out if it gets too warm
It probably won't do any harm if you want to feed it. Grandpas sunday lunch is definetly one of the most popular so always a good one to start with
We feed a small amount (less than half a teaspoon) at once, how often depends why we're feeding it but unless its pups then we rarely feed it more than once a week. Yes, we put it in either a separate bowl or a cake case

Re: baby food
i use the sunday lunch one too. But anything without onion or garlic is ok. Freeze the left overs in an icecube tray otherwise you'll throw out alot. I put mine on an espresso saucer lol. Mine is a treat so very rarely get it.

Re: baby food
I'm currently feeding it to my slightly underweight Isabelle and because she has very short top teeth, making it hard for her to eat normal food.

I'm curious... how short is short?! Hammys top teeth are very short. it's their bottom ones that are extremely long. They should meet though.

Quite a lot shorter than they should be. They're just poking out of her gum
Hopefully they grow back

Re: baby food
I feed it to my dwarf who is currently refusing all other food (and is having lots of vet visits and extra care) daily. This is what has been keeping her alive for a few months now, since she generally wont eat anything else and when she does it is very small amounts. I use various ones, and if she doesn't eat much of one flavour I swap to another one to tempt her to eat. She gets a full bowl full so that she can eat as much as she likes and never has an empty bowl. But she only weights about 32g (was down to less than 25g) compared to her sisters who are usually between 47g and 55g.
My others get it every 3 days or so as a treat, just so I don't waste too much. The dwarf hamsters and gerbils get a little finger nail sized amount about .5cm thick each (not that I measure it but just an idea of how little) and my Syrian gets about .7cm thick (so only a bit more).
It does say on the jar that you cannot freeze it, so I haven't been doing this. I did try making my own so that I could freeze it but my poorly dwarf wont eat it, although my others quite enjoyed it.

Re: baby food
RedSky, are you sure they didn't mean don't freeze the jar? I pictured Kryll making hers into ice cubes using an ice cube tray.
I've been thinking about letting mine try some turkey baby food I have leftover from cat's teeth cleaning. Will a Chinese hamster eat it?
