Default Treat Ideas Thread

I know that I'm always looking for new treat ideas for my little ones, especially ones outside of the pet shop. With me working in one, I have totally exhausted the treat shelves. :L

I thought it would be cool to have a thread for treat ideas you have come across, especially if you find some great cheaper treats (we all know pet shops are expensive!) or treats for special little ones, such as diabetes-prone Russians and Chinese. It can be hard to find treats for the little sugar-free fluffs!

Here's one of mine -

I regularly buy wholefood items and natural snacks for myself, and the NuMe range in Morrisons has a little selection of snack packets that have all sorts to offer! They are all natural and plain, with no added sugars, preservatives, salt or anything! Most are just plain and pure.
They are 2 packets for £1, and I normally get some for the hams while I'm at it.

The ones I buy for them:

Carrot Crisps (slices of dried carrot, and nothing else)
Beetroot Crisps (same again, just plain dried beetroot slices)
Cashew nuts (plain and unflavoured/unsalted)
Hazelnuts (plain and unflavoured)
Goji Berries (plain dried berries)
Brasil nuts (unflavoured)

And a couple of others like the pumpkin and sunflower seeds. It's great, two packets of natural healthy treats for £1!

I got some baby organix multigrain hearts. They are vanilla flavour and the ingredients are... organic wholegrain rice flour, organic wholegrain wheat flour, organic maize flour, organic oat flour, organic vanilla extract, calcium and vitamin B1.

They LOVE them and I rather enjoy them myself hehe!

edit for price, cost me 89p for 4 little bags

I was actually thinking about this earlier and whether it would be both cheaper and healthier to make my own treats for my hamster - especially since we eat pretty much the same types of food anyway 🙈 I also saw those little packets in morrisons for 10p I didn't really look at the ingredients and whether there was added sugar, etc but I may go back and get some now I know 😊

I've got some of those! I was looking at the baby biscotti and wondering whether I could give it to the hams, when I saw these. Mine love them too.

Yeah I think sometimes it is better to do it that way. Most of the time pet shop treats are so unhealthy and expensive.

My hamsters don't seem to care for the sweet treats in stores. They just take a couple bites. Their favorites are carrots, broccoli, mini dog biscuits, peanuts with shell, and bran flakes. I know there is SOOO much more so could try with them so I love idea threads!

There are lots of things I like that I share with the hamsters. My Swiss Muesli, pasta whenever I have it, and chicken when I make it. I bought a pound each of slivered almonds, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds. I use them in cereal and when I make cakes and cookies. I nibble them sometimes at night and the hams, of course, get them too. I did something this year that I have been wanting to do that has been good for the hammies too. I bought freeze dried cans of peas, carrots, corn, celery, and sweet potato. I got tired of veggies going bad in the fridge, especially in the winter when I can't get out. It has worked out wonderfully. I just take a couple of peas and carrot flakes. Put them in a small dish with a little warm water. 5 minutes later I have reconstituted peas every bit as good as fresh. What a world!!! The hams love it. All my hams like Milk Bones and Yoda's little tiny bones fit the hams perfectly. They all love the Greenies, which keep Yoda's doggie breath at bay and the hams teeth trimmed.

I know I am spreading it a lot recently, but my hamsters adore Heinz Creamed Porridge! It is about 65p from most supermarkets

Another thing I like doing, is buying the dirt cheap plain popcorn kernels and popping them. The hams adore them and they are super healthy! You can buy pet safe popcorn with flavourings as well! x

Some Great Ideas Guys!

The majority of treats I feed my hamster are things that I eat myself. It's to the point that I'll buy certain fruits and veggies thinking that the hamster will like this. I'll even share some of my common breakfast items with her like a piece of boiled egg or porridge with blueberries. If I don't share with her, she'll wake up and start running around the cage trying to figure out where the yummy smells are coming from. It's hard not to share a piece of food with her then.

The current hamster I have is also completely obsessed with dried mealworm, at first I thought she hated them but that quickly changed. I usually scatter food in the cage in the morning which she'll normally come out and gather but some mornings she'll completely ignore me until I pick up the container of mealworms. She knows it either by smell or sound and it's enough to get her out of the nest and be eager for food. Other mornings she wakes up when she hears me and I swear she's not happy until I give her one.
