I use a ceramic hamster bowl and fill it to the top, hamsters are not stupid enough to drown in water so I see no problem with bowls. As for shallow bowls again not really an issue with a normal hamster bowl as hamsters wont get into it anyway and if they do they wont harm themselves. x

Make sure you check often if it is a plastic bowl as they can knock them over

Thanks for all the ideas, I had some small ceramic bowls so I placed them in the cages. Hopefully now I don't have to worry about them not getting enough.
