Default Long haired

Are there any foods that I can give my long haired male to promote a healthy coat?

well the only things I have really heard of to promote healthy coats are brewers yeast (either sprinkled on the dry food, or mixed in with wet food such as porridge) and linseeds.
a lot of the time it seems to be down to genetics, as to whether your long haired ham gets tufts or a full skirt, but keeping them on a non-tangle bedding and grooming regularly (but not too much) can help!

In the past when a hamster has had a poor coat we have given them a cod liver oil capsule. They are comical when it pops and covers their feet in oil but their coats do improved albeit with a strange fishy smell about it

lol! OK I will give that a go, and the yeast! We've got loads of cod liver oil as I suffer from hypermobility in my feet so my joints get achey. It really does help!

Sorry if this is a bit off topic, but i dont want to start a new topic about a similar subject.

I was wandering if it would help long hair to grow better if it was trimmed at the ends?

Also, if i did cut the hair just at the ends, how long would it take to grow back?

Thanks,

Tammy x

I don't think it makes any difference to the growth rate if the coat is trimmed Tammy however you would lose points at a show if you entered an obviously trimmed animal. It depends on the season and moult stage how thick the coat looks and also on the activity of the hammie and care of the coat. We find the debittered brewers yeast from Holland and Barratts works well to help the coats and is also good mixed in porridge for babies.

i trimmed Harvey once and the growth rate was similar to humans. I've heard of the codliver oil thing, too, but never tried it.
