Actually, my hamsters seem to do just fine without giving them a single piece of hay. I guess its down to personal opinion though.
They can do fine as long as they have other sources of fiber just like some hamsters live full lives being fed low protein high fat food and others have problems. I said they should have it they don't need it though. I only recently started they hay. Didn't give mine any for years. They like using it for nests and nibbling on it. ALong with being a good source of fiber its good for the teeth too
Mine quite enjoy a little hay. I bought a box of Excel ... salad snacks or something, and it's got some sweet hay and dried red cabbage or beetroot in it. They love it!
Bran flakes are also good for a little fibre boost.
Is the hay in this ok?
