Default Re: Burgess dwarf - picking bits out?

Harry Hamster is okay and I fed it to my Syrian once, but he soon got bored with it so I switched to Tesco`s own brand and he liked it. I just felt he needed a change. The WAGG and the Tesco Hamster mix are very similar in ingredients and analysis. They also have smaller extruded biscuits! So easier for a dwarf hamster to hold. I use my pestle & mortar to break up anything too large! But the mixes I use now don`t require any breaking up! See how he goes with the Harry and if he leaves a lot of it and goes for the Burgess mostly, maybe try the WAGG at some stage switching over gradually over a week just to keep his enthusiasm going. Dry mixes are usually fine to add and switch around. It`s introducing fresh foods that usually require small amounts as these can cause tummy upsets in hamsters. But dry mixes are prepared to be easily digested. x

I do think the large HH biscuits are a bit much for him, and those are the parts he takes forever to get through. I'll start breaking them up and see how it goes. I've just had a nosey at his bowl and all of the burgess is gone. It's only HH stuff left haha! I definitely think he needs a full mix overhaul! I'll grab a bag of WAAG when I get my weekly shop next week

Looks like he`s made up his mind about the HH! Do try the WAGG because my robo eats it and was fed on it when I adopted him around two weeks ago and he`s a picture of health. Lovely coat too! I decided to stick with the WAGG he is on and added the Burgess Dwarf mix as well because I had planned to buy a bag of Canary seed to add to the WAGG anyway, but thought better of it and bought the Burgess Dwarf instead since it already has Canary seed mix added and this mix is made for dwarf hamsters with the other bits in it. So these two foods do a great job. The Burgess is millet and other small grains, while the WAGG offers the extruded biscuits, peanuts and also other bits and pieces like dried apple and grape with grains. x

Give it a go kimlck because it would be a shame to let it go past it`s `use by` date. I find the WAGG doesn`t need feeding in large amounts anyway, so a small teaspoonful is fine and can last more than a few days depending on how greedy the hamster is!

I`ve stopped worryring about diabetes and commercial mixes althogether now because I feel it`s worrying over nothing. If a hamster is going to develope diabetes, it probably will regardless of it`s daily rations. Commercial mixes are just that. Nutritionally made to have everything a hamster requires and if some of the dried ingredients happen to be a little sweetened, it`s actually beneficial to have some sugar in the diet anyway rather than none at all. x
