Default Couple of feeding questions

Hi all

Came home with my 5 week old Hamster 'Peanut' on Saturday and I have a couple of questions...

Being the age/he/she is (not sure on sex yet).....is there anything special I should feed apart from the usual seed mix....will he/she need anything to help grow up strong ie extra calcium for strong bones?

Also Im currently feeding Pets at Home Hamster Muesli - is this a good food to start on.....or should I consider another brand?

I don't find Pets at Home food that bad but everyone loves Harry Hamster, which is probably one of the best foods you can get for your hamster
I don't think you need to feed Peanut anything special due to his/her age. Just give him/her the odd treat and bits of fruit and veg and I'm sure everything will be fine!
Pets at Home sell a vitamin solution that you can just put a few drops of into the hamsters water if you're worried it needs extra vitamins etc xo

The dry diet she eats will maintain her health as far as vitamin & minerals and nutrition goes. Very small pieces (fingernail sized) can be offered a few times a week. Things like broccoli, cucumber, carrot, fresh bean sprout shoots are all enjoyed. Calcium is something that is also added to dry mixes so check your food packet analysis.

As a main mix that food should be sufficient to cover her basic nutritional needs. You can give her a few extras if you wish, but these should be offered as treats in moderation.
As the ham is technically still growing, you could give them a protein boost with a little scrambled egg on occasion, or some cooked plain chicken (these should be offered in portions no bigger than the size of your thumb nail. Anything they store will quickly spoil and them an upset stomach). You can also give a dog biscuit or a couple pieces of puppy kibble; these have plenty of protein, vitamins and minerals, though should be fed in moderation. High fat levels are essential to dogs for energy, absorption and skin/coat health, so kibble is very fatty and too much is not healthy for hams. Dried mealworms are also good.

You can also give a small amount of fresh fruit and veg, like broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, kale, apple, banana etc. But just as with the egg and chicken, only as much as they can eat in one sitting.

If you would like some help sexing, if you post a pic of the hammy's bottom we can help you identify.
