Re: Food..
At the moment, Todd the dwarf is getting a mixture of Burgess SupaHamster Dwarf, budgie seed, some mixed wild bird seed, popped rice and bran flakes, and some Nature's Way puppy food.
Fin the Syrian is getting Burgess SupaHamster (normal/syrian mix), some left over Harry Hamster, wild bird seed, extra mealworms, Nature's Way puppy food, and a little bit of cheaper food which has whole peas, locust beans and the only pellet that I've ever seen a hamster eat (in fact, it's the first thing he picks out!).

Re: Food..
IMHO, I don't see what's wrong with Hazel/Harry Hamster. Sure, some people complain that its a little plain, or that their hamsters don't eat all of it, but its really a good quality food. Now, with that said, you don't absolutely HAVE to use it. Its not like everyone will think you're a bad hamster owner if you don't, its just what I personally like to use and have had success with.
If you find it a bit plain, then by all means, add some other things to it, or even add other mixes to it, if you'd like. Its not like you HAVE to use HH and nothing else. Using HH as a base mix, and adding what you feel will make it better and have the variety that you would feel your hamster would like is perfectly fine.
If you feel that another mix is better than HH, then go ahead and buy it. Its your personal choice as to what you feed your hamster, and yours alone. No one else knows your hamster better than you, so you should know what he/she likes and doesn't like.

they really seem to enjoy it, and I supplement with fresh fruit and veg every other day. they also get baby food (though not in the last few weeks), dog biscuits and some herbage mix by Burgess that I forget the name of. the only thing they seem to leave til last/completely are the extruded orangey/green biscuits and the alfafa pellets. they also don't seem as keen on the squashed flat maize things either.

Hi cathface, what portions of each do you use. I'm using HH with another one added at the moment and give the mealworms as a great. There doesn't seem a lot of dust in your mix x

hello, the proportions are this:
700g bag of HH
750g bag of Vitakraft VitaNature
400g Applaws kitten
80g mealworms
in retrospect I don't feel I needed to add that much Applaws and didn't need to add mealworms alongside the Applaws. it's too much effort to pick them out now but in future I think I will either only add one of those (as they're both for boosting protein), or add a little of both (eg. 100-200g of Applaws, 50g of mealworms). it's not too bad at the moment as neither of my hamsters are elderly (less protein needed) and also I can always pick out mealworms and kitten food if I think there is too much of either in the handful I've added to their bowls.
edit: oh and it doesn't look dusty as it's from above! there is a bit of crumbling/dust at the bottom but that's all entirely from the HH, as I was originally feeding HH on its own and the dust was there from out the bag.

Re: Food..
Thanks for this post, my robo's have meal worms everyday but my syrian hates them,, he has cooked chicken and sctambled egg but it varies how often. They each have their own bags of HH so i know they get their fair share. But ive always wanted to add i just didn't know what or how much. Will be investing in some kitten food and budgie seed this week

That's what I said. There is no need to get a tone with me. Then again, its hard to tell if someone has a tone with only words on the screen.
