Weird Food Idea
I just had a weird food idea.
I was looking around for a food mix to feed in conjunction with a rodent block and wanted to know if I make a mix and whirl it up in a blender till it is powder, could I bake it into a biscuit? All dry ingredients would be blended of course.
Also I saw somewhere how to make a biscuit/cookie treat and sugar was an ingredient. All of the ingredients were human edible, but since it wouldn't be used for human consumption wouldn't omitting the sugar be healthier?

Re: Weird Food Idea
You say in conjunction with a rodent block - so what is your hamsters main diet? A rodent block? If your ham is a syrian, the muesli mix Harry Hamster is a good one.
Yes, you can make hamster biscuits, but definitely NEVER add sugar! hamsters can get diabetes and sugar be avoided whenever possible.

Re: Weird Food Idea
Not sure what type of hamster I have (my intro shows a pic).
Right now he is strictly on a rodent block diet. (I have a post in the health forum about cheek impaction which explains why he is on the block diet only atm.) He was underfed a seed diet, so rodent blocks for now.
I think I saw a list of mix comparisons, but I can't remember if it showed it by types of hamsters....

It is really hard to tell from the picture- we'd need a clearer one to tell you for sure.
Anyway, once his cheek problem is sorted, then you can start thinking about mixes and treats. Just a thought - to choose a good mix, you will need to know what kind of hamster he is. We could help if you have a picture of his whole body, or maybe there is someone that could identify him for you?
if he ends up being a dwarf hamster, you need to be extremely wary of what food and treats you give him as they are very prone to diabetes. So, before you start making treats etc, best to try and find out what he is!

I'll get a better pic, do you guys want his length? His eyes are red (not sure if that is indicative of any species) and he is a creamish color.

Re: Weird Food Idea
Didn't you mention that he's got a line down his back? Being a creamish colour and having a line down his back pretty much guarantees you've got a hybrid dwarf (a cross between campbells and winter white)
And that does make him a diabetes prone ham unfortunately

Re: Weird Food Idea
Yes a line down his back. Aww that sucks he's diabetic prone. What is their lifespan? The paperwork I have for him says he came into the shelter in July of 2012 and at that time was 1 year old at the time.

Re: Weird Food Idea
Er... You may not like my answer then. They tend to live for roughly two years. Can be less or can be longer. It depends a lot on the ham. The good news is that if a ham does develop diabetes it looks like the older they are when they develop it the less likely it'll affect their lifespan

Re: Weird Food Idea
Yeah I kinda figured they didn't have very long lifespans, and looking at the paperwork, at least I got him out of the shelter, lets hope we have some time to hang out together.
