I have two robo dwarf hamsters, and I don't know if your hamsters are like mine, where they tend to be really picky about their food. So far, I have found a brand that they seem to like. But, I was still worried about their protein intake. So, I had bought them dog treats, to find that the kind I got they didn't seem to want. So, long story short, I looked around on youtube about how to make your own hamster treats! You can look it up on youtube, but I will also describe it on here.
Hamster Cookies
What you will need:
1)The hamster food you are currently using
2) An egg (you will only be using the egg white)
3) some peanut butter or honey (I used only a little bit of peanut butter for mine)
4) Oats (I used original flavored)
5) Cheerios (also original)
6) Crushed up dog treats ( I only used 1 dog treat)
7) There are some additional ingredients you can add such as raisins, or other treat like items you feed your hamster. I didn't add these because It wouldn't be healthy for little guys.
a cupcake pan with cupcake liners
9) a bowl
10) a spoon
11) 1 tablespoon
(side note: Depending on how many treats you want to make, the ingredients are subjected to change. With mine, I was able to make 6 treats.)
Instructions:
1)Set the oven to 325 degrees
2) Add to your bowl: 3 tablespoons of the hamster food, 2 tablespoon of oats, 1 tablespoon of cheerios, and the crumbled up dog treat. Mix the dry ingredients together.
3) Then add the egg (make sure you only use the eggwhite), and a spoonful of peanut butter.
4) Mix the ingredients, the mix should stick together, if it seems kind of liquidy still, add a little bit more dry ingredients to it. I also know some people use some flour to make it more compact.
5) Add some liners to your cupcake tray, and put the contents of the bowl in each liner. (I only made a thin layer, but you could make it as thick or thin as you want).
6) Then you bake the treats in the oven for about 15 minutes. If after 15 minutes they still seem a bit soft (they should harden), then cook them for about another 5 minutes. Once they are hardened, let them cool.
7) Once I was done with this process, I took them out of the liners. Then I put them in a ziplock bag, and put them in the freezer for freshness.
I currently tried this about a week ago, and my hamsters seemed to love it! They have to work for the pieces they want out of the treat. I found that 1 of these treats is just way to big for them (I'll show you why), but you could always break these down to the size you want them. I am thinking about making them in half. Also, the other benefit is I know my hamsters are getting the nutrition they need.
As for the people who want to try this, the ingredients are subject to change on how you want it. At least with this treat, you know exactly what they are getting, and know it's safe for them. Thanks guys! Hope you enjoy.
